Editorial Reviews

Review

“Experts used to regard an edition of this much revised typescript as well-nigh impossible. Now they have been proved wrong: Aue and Luckhardt have miraculously succeeded in producing a scrupulously accurate and at the same time highly readable edition and translation of this previously missing link between Wittgenstein’s Tractatus and his later writings.” Joachim Schulte, Universität Bielefeld

“Here is Wittgenstein’s most important unpublished typescript, expertly edited and superbly translated. Required reading for anyone interested in what Wittgenstein wrote after the Tractatus and before the Philosophical Investigations.” David Stern, University of Iowa

Book Description

In 1933, Wittgenstein set out to dictate a collection of his recent writings to a typist in the form of a book. Even as he was dictating he began revising the text extensively, so that the surviving typewritten manuscript contains numerous corrections, additions, deletions, alternative words and phrasings, suggestions for moves within the text, and marginal comments in both handwritten and typed form. Long awaited by the scholarly community, Wittgenstein's so-called Big Typescript (von Wright Catalog no. TS 213) is presented here for the first time in an en-face German-English scholars' edition, complete with clear indications to help the reader identify the various levels of Wittgenstein's editing. This text provided a rich source of material for Wittgenstein's subsequent writings, and therefore serves as a key to understanding much of his later philosophy.

I bought all Luki's nachlass as they were edited and released by the clan. Seeing this typescript brought home the editing skills displayed in some of it (i.e., the various "Remarks on..." all of which I found extremely educational, except the mathematics one which - I admit - I bailed on). I guess the glamour has faded a little as the decades passed but in my mind he's still the philosophical genius of the last century. Of course, I had read much about the big typescript and eagerly awaited it. What's it now? Forty years? More?

I'm rating it five because of it's historical significance. The different typographical modes used to signify additions, corrections, etc are a hurdle, but what were the editors to do with a manuscript like this? You certainly don't need this volume to understand or appreciate Wittgenstein and it isn't as excitng as some of the other nachlass. And, of course, his philosophic development has been analyzed already in many informative books. At this price, I'm sure none but academics will be buying. Still, for them it will provide hours of casual reading as it has for me. When I bought mine a year ago, I think I just paid $80 or so. Look around. You might try addall.com.
