PreS-Gr 2-Higgins's latest offering is a fun story of two bicycle enthusiasts who accidentally meet and develop a friendship. Maurice owns a lemonade stand on wheels, while Lotta rides around collecting sticks to distribute from the basket on her bike. When the two crash and are left to manage on foot, a crafty Sid intervenes and saves the day. The narrative is lyrical and charming, with "squeezy drops of sunshine" lemons and heartfelt adoration for the possibility found in twigs. OHora's acrylic illustrations are quirky, and the characters' expressions are endearing. The page layouts shift from full page to comic book-style panels, which in some cases could lead to a little confusion for newly independent readers and may make the title better as a one-on-one read rather than a larger group share for storytime. However, the tale's message, that sometimes things that were once new can quickly become familiar and comfortable, particularly when making friends, is solid encouragement for young readers. VERDICT A sweet story of friendship, full of musings about potential that can be inspiring to imaginative minds. Carter Higgins is the author of many books for young readers, including Everything You Need for a Treehouse, an NPR Best Book of the Year, This is Not a Valentine, a Kids' Indie Next List selection, and a chapter book series, Audrey L & Audrey W: Best Friends-ish. Circle Under Berry is her first book as both author and illustrator. Carter is a creative storyteller who designs playful experiences around visual literacy and believes the wit of kids' language is the best poetry of all.

She is an Emmy-winning visual effects and motion graphics artist and spent a decade as an elementary school librarian. She is also the creator of the popular blog, Design of the Picture Book. You can find her on Twitter and Instagram @carterhiggins. She lives in Las Vegas.

Pictures were good. The story was somewhat hard to follow for a 5 year old. We don’t read it much for bedtime anymore after two tries. Wouldn’t recommend. Think the moral of the story could have been projected more clearly in a more childlike story.

We received this book in our Prime Book Box and were excited about the cover but that is where the excitement ended. The book has a cute message but it is lost in the words. The sentences are not written in a way that a child easily follows, it is more like a children's book written for adults. The pictures are cute. We will donate this one.

It's a perfect blend of humor and detailed illustrations and paaages of beautiful text (filled with great craft to study with young writers!) and messages about the power of friendship and a great slant on how we can and do make friends. I recommend this book for ALL AGES!! It's perfect in every aspect!

I got this book as part of the monthly prime box for my 5-year-old son. I knew nothing about it other than the title, but it sounded like harmless fun. The pictures are engaging and lively, but I was blown away by how utterly incomprehensible the story is. Even I, a grown adult, couldn't figure out what the point of the story was. The way some sentences are written make no sense whatsoever or are too complex for a 5-year-old to understand. I had to explain to my son what was actually going on. It was so confusing, I honestly thought some pages were missing. Overall, it's a fun idea, but the writing is terrible.
