I'm not sure where he ranks even though I've read the book.

While this book really puts Bill Clinton's presidency in context I'm not quite sure what his place in history really is. Yes he was president during perhaps the greatest economic boom in the history of the United States but how much of it was him and how much of it was the Federal Reserve and the free market? I think that's hard to answer.

Clinton was an okay president but not a great one. All he did was push through a bunch of minor initiatives that nobody really remembers. He didn't have big transformative accomplishments that shape history like all great presidents have done. His healthcare reform plan could have moved him up a few spots in the rankings had it passed but it didn't and besides the scheme was so confusing that Robert Reich still can't explain it to people. Impeachment, as political as the motivation was, doesn't help either.

So what's left? He wasn't great. In fact I think he's pretty forgettable.

But he was an empathetic guy who wanted to help people as best as he could. He kept us out of war for 8 years. At the same time he supported free trade agreements like NAFTA which have done damage to the country.

And yet...after George W. Bush's horrible presidency Clinton actually looks pretty good as a president.

I don't know, it's a fascinating paradox with him.

A good summary of the times and career of President Clinton....not detailed...we will have to wait for some time for all the documentation to be studied....but as a concise summary, I enjoyed it.

A first-rate, accessible biography of Bill Clinton. Really impressive job of placing Clinton in broad context while getting at all the essentials regarding his presidency. The book is compact, wonderfully written, sound in its judgments, and very, very smart. Where many treatments of Clinton are doorstops, Maney's biography is a refreshing primer. Can't recommend it highly enough. And did I mention it offers a forward glimpse into what a Hillary presidency might look like? Another big plus.

A succinct and very well written study of the Clinton administration. The book does a fine job of placing Clinton’s centrist policies in their historical context, in some ways similar to but in others very different from today’s situation. It makes for a very enjoyable read and brings back a number of things I had forgotten. Anyone else recall the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998?
