There are three simple factors that make "Billboard #1's: Classic Country" a superior choice when compared to other similar compilations. First of all, the 30 songs included were all bona fide hits in their day, an interesting mix of instantly recognizable standards (like Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter" and Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line") and half-forgotten gems that are ripe for rediscovery and renewed appreciation (like The Browns' "Three Bells" and Jim Reeves' "Four Walls"). Sure, one could quibble about why certain songs were included while another favorite by the same singer was left out, but overall the selections chosen comprise a wonderful overview of popular country music from the mid 1950's through the late 1980's.

Secondly, the songs included are the original hits performed by the original artists, as opposed to re-recordings of those hits by their original artists. The difference is more important than you might at first believe. Several other compilations include Ray Price's "For The Good Times" ... but it's a newer version in which the older Price doesn't display the same magnificent vocal range. Here you get the powerful 1970 original which was recorded when Mr. Price's voice was in peak condition. Ditto Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden", Roger Miller's "King of the Road", and several other songs.

Finally, each and every song on this collection has been painstakingly remastered and sounds crystal clear, as if it was recorded recently. That's high praise indeed considering that a few of these tracks date back more than half a century! But in fact, even some of the more recent songs sound better than they did on their original CD releases, when the technology used to transfer analog recordings to digital format was less advanced.

EXCELLENT 2 disk set!!! It's one of the best compilations of Classic Country #1 hits, in my opinion. I bought it as gifts for 5 other people and they also thought it was fantastic. I highly recommend this set.

I enjoyed this CD. It helps balance my collection of new country with the classics. Didn't find a song I didn't enjoy.

My musical tastes have evolved through the years but in my younger days I grew up on country music. Thus, I still have a affinity to the genre from the 70s and 80s. This is a nice collection to scratch that itch when I feel nostalgic. Most of the songs I remember listening to are here. I was also introduced to others I did not know. In all, it's a nice cross section of music from the period I was a fan. Just the existence of this collection I found interesting: there's score upon score of "classic rock" albums to be found. This is the first, and best, collection of country classics I've seen. Even if I compiled my own playlist I'd be hard pressed to come up with as good a list as this. However, there are some omissions I find strange. Perhaps some I remember just never peaked so high as these. Still, a good collection if you like the genre. Kudos to Billboard for doing a Classic Country collection.

* Hear famous artists from yesteryear, such as Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, and Tammy Wynette.

* Songs are in their "original" radio recording, but remastered for better sound quality.

* Memorable tracks include "The Gambler," "Coal Miner's Daughter," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Forever and Ever, Amen," "On the Road Again," "I Fall to Pieces," "Stand by Your Man," "I Walk the Line," and "I Love a Rainy Night."

* A solid foundation to a new music collection to give as a gift or a respectable set to listen to the familiar country greats (and not have to keep switching discs to get their hits).

This was a great deal at $1.99. The group of songs is a good representation of classic country. IMHO, I doubt if the Willie Nelson tune, "On The Road Again" is one of his best nor a classic, and there are a few that are not know to me, but that is me. Most are classic cuts and worth putting on a disc. Good the car for travelling,, especially these days when "country" has been taken over by guys that are all hat and no talent and women who mistake caterwauling for style.

I really do not like country music to much. Some of what I do like is the older material that I heard as I was growing up in Kentucky. It has a variety of artists, of course, from Buck Owens to Randy Travis. It sounds great on my i-phone and it was easy to download and transfer to i-tunes. If you like the classics of country from artists like, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Jim Reeves, Ray Price, Faron Young and so forth, this is a great collection.

I purchased this CD for my great uncle who lives in a rest home. He loved the song selection and quality of the CD. He listens to it over and over again and really enjoys the memories the songs bring back. Highly recommended CD.
