Another reviewer is spot on regarding this album serving as a masterclass for piano. Wilson is one of my three favorite pianists (the other two are Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell.)
Most of us who are Teddy Wilson fans are also Lester Young and Billie Holiday fans (and if not, we are certainly familiar with their work.) In that respect this album is like taking the Teddy Wilson led sessions of the mid 1930s (many of which are on Musical Romance), and removing everyone but Teddy from the mix. His playing is nearly identical as it was for those sessions and his silvery tone and beautiful touch can be clearly heard isolated from the other instruments. That is what another reviewer was getting at, and that alone makes this album essential to pianists.
However, there is another factor, and that is the pure enjoyment both Teddy's playing and the songs selected bring to a listener. One need not be a pianist or even a musician to enjoy this album. Indeed, one need not be a jazz aficionado because the music and Teddy's playing transcend a genre or style.
This can be either a study in piano or a listening experience - or both. It's one of my most often played albums when I am in the mood for Teddy, and one I can recommend to anyone who has refined musical tastes.
