So you have Kaylie who has had her childhood ripped away from her after being kidnapped and held captive for 10 years. Its been 6 years since she was set free but then she finds ‘free’ is a word that’s subjective as she’s continued to feel trapped in the world she now lives. Everything has changed from what she remembers as a child and she feels like she is always trying to catch up. She doesn’t know how to fit in to the world around her but after talking to her online therapist he suggests she go to a BDSM club called Shamballa where she will be able to express her desires in a safe environment.
Once there she becomes attached to a certain Dom and finally feels free. He is always silent and wears a mask but even though it creates a barrier between them she feels connected to him in a way that she doesn’t with anyone else. He is holding back secrets aswell and you have to wonder whether they will help bring each other the peace they are looking for.
When Kaylie’s life is in danger she looks to people who she can trust to help, but is her trust misplaced. She usually gets a feeling for certain situations and you have to wonder why she doesn’t always listen to them. She is a complex character who reads those around her – this talent might yet save her life.
I liked this flow of this story; it was a short read so easy to handle in an hour or so and leaves you wanting to know what will happen next. Eden Claire is an author to watch so will definitely continue with the series.
I received this ARC from Give Me Books for my honest review.
“We’re standing face to face, and I watch as he peels his black mask off of him. The streetlight casts a glow on his face. Wow! My heart melts. He’s even more breathtaking than in his selfies. I take in his sparkling green eyes, chiseled jawline, and high cheekbones. My eyes devour his full lips, the same lips I’ve tasted. Yum. This man is beautiful, and he wants me.”
5 dark, sexy stars! Wow this book is heartbreaking but at the same time almost beautiful. You feel the pain that Kaylie is going through and understand her connection to Mask!
Pain-sometimes you endure it for pleasure...or for survival.
My name is Kaylie Flanders, and maybe you heard my story. I was held captive by a psychopath for a decade; six years ago, I escaped. Freedom, though, is harder than I thought it would be.
The only place I feel truly alive is inside the darkness of Club Shamballa. In the shadows of the club, I meet a masked stranger with piercing green eyes, a body chiseled to perfection, and a magic touch.
I can’t see him, I can’t hear him—yet he touches me in ways no one else has before.
Who is Mask, and what is he hiding? Can we heal our broken pasts together?
BILLIONAIRE IN THE DARK is the first installment of the BILLIONAIRE IN THE DARK series, a romantic suspense series full of steam, tortured souls, and twists and turns. Mature audiences 18+ only
To say Kaylie has had a rough life is putting it mildly. Kidnapped by a family friend at the age of 6 has put major trust issues in her brain.Read more ›
Kaylie has been told she suffers from stockholm syndrome. Her therapist whom she only communicates with vie online messaging and texts has given her a few suggestions on how to deal with this. One of those was to visit club Shamballa. Now I thought stockholm syndrome meant only that she bonded with and felt sympathy for her captor/kidnapper. I didn't get that vibe from Kaylie but I did get the vibe that now that she is free from him and back in the real world, that she misses the isolation. People are judgy and loud and the world is too much for her at times.
There is a run-in at the club with a masked dominant whom she rapidly develops an attraction to. There are also "friends" at the club (more like acquaintances) that she is familiar with. Her parents, whom she still lives with no nothing of this part of her life.
The plot was a little confusing for me and took a twist here and there that just didn't feel right, or perhaps wasn't explained enough. Overall the premise is interesting and those points aside was a decent read - it just didn't manage to sink it's hooks into me yet. I think I probably will continue with the series to satisfy my curiosity as to where it is going.
Kaylie is a victim of abduction. She spent a lot of her childhood years being held captive by a man who kidnapped her. When she gets free, everything around her has changed; including herself. Trying to come to terms with the heavy trauma she is burdened with, she decides to seek answers and solace in a private BDSM club. Shamballa is the place where she can be free.
Under the hands of a certain Dom, she finds bliss. In the hands of the silent Mask, she discovers pleasure and their scenes together make her forget her awful past.
When her life is in danger, she will have to trust others, but will they be sincere, or will she find herself in even bigger trouble? Read to find out!
I love novellas. Especially when they are well written and they feel whole and complete. This book is a great intro to the series and I am certainly excited to know more about Kaylie and Mask. I want to see where this rocky road will take them. Their chemistry was explosive and their connection palpable.
4.5 Stars from me!
