On a rainy Sunday afternoon I started reading and I have to say, Bill's story kept me on the edge of my chair flying through the pages. It is well written and keeps the reader interested to find out if and how Bill would eventually solve his aggravating situation. It describes the workday and life of a typical US middle class employee muddling through his day in search for balance between work and his private life. Great lesson wrapped in a novel!
Francis is a colleague of mine. We met a little over a year ago when he was a speaker at the annual conference of the Institute for Challenging Disorganization. When he told me about the business fable he was writing I was intrigued. I read this book when it first came out earlier this year. I really enjoyed the book, but I didn't review it right away because I wanted the impact of the book to influence my review, as opposed to my relationship with author. This morning as I considered the benefits of rereading this book, I knew it was time to write this review. With so many new books coming out in the areas of ADHD, coaching and time management I struggle to keep up with my reading list, so when I actually go back to re-read a book, I know there was something really special about it. This is one of those books. Thank you for taking the time and initiative to write it Francis.
I think this is the future, at least for certain types of learning. Learning by story, or fable / parable, makes it so easy to grasp and ingest. It's interesting because in the story, the main characters are working on a system that combines gamification and education together to promote faster learning, which is a similar paradigm.
Bill was so much like me in many ways, so I connected almost immediately with the tale. It focuses on someone who is keen to do really well at their job, but whose current time management system has started failing him. He finds himself in trouble in an organisation that is going through a bunch of restructures (cost-cutting), and all of a sudden he questions his own ability to provide for his family. Now getting better at time management is absolutely critical to his life. This puts him on an arc that drives desperation, frustration, then experimentation, analysis and eventually victory.
I thought it was really clever how in the early parts of the story you are trying to guess which concepts are the important ones. Like Bill (the main character), you don't know what is right or wrong yet. You are shown some concepts by others, and have to think about them to determine if they will actually work. He evaluates them on his learning journey, and so do you as the reader.
I really think the way Francis has broken down the concepts of time management into 'ladders' or 'fundamentals' is the right idea. It allows you to select whatever technology you like to fill the gap, as long as it does that 'function' adequately. It gives you freedom to mix the use of lists and schedules as required, and use a mix of technology that is right for you. I do, however, wish there was more content at the back of the book to explain more about the ladders, as after you read it you will be fired up!
A great read that really changed my perception in this area.
