Join Bill on his ride from oblivion, thru desperation, beyond frustration and on to enlightenment. After years of reading dry, rigid, "how-to" formulas for time management, I was delighted to be shown a better path.
Whether your goal is moving up the corporate ladder, rescheduling your To-Do List to accommodate your 4-Hour Work Week or just having better control over the precious commodity that is your time, Bill's Im-Perfect Time Management Adventure by Francis Wade is a must-read.
In a very easy way this book reminds of of some important lessons which we often forget or ignore. By being receptive to learning from his mistakes, Bill reminds us of the importance of some basic values like respect for individual opinions, burying pride and saying sorry and allowing the other person to take credit without sacrificing credibility.
Bill is able to survive the reality of layoffs and promise of more layoffs, his parents' illness and the threat of depression - all while trying to improve his company's gaming technology for use in educational/teaching environments. The sacrifices made to share his enthusiasm with his colleagues ensure his personal growth, improved efficiency and contagious confidence of his team members.
A must read for those wanting genuine improvement!
Wade has done an excellent job of weaving his message in a very gripping story of a professional who is in danger of losing his job. With a family to support and sick parents on top of it he operates out of fear for losing his job and Wade does very well to show how this context works against him.
The book seems a bit short on specifics but the author makes it clear that this is by design. There are two other books planned that will cover some of what is missing plus the author has links to other resources where the reader can learn the specific how-to's the protaganist refers to.
Overall, I would recommend any manager having productivity issues to have her entire staff read this book.
I think this is the future, at least for certain types of learning. Learning by story, or fable / parable, makes it so easy to grasp and ingest. It's interesting because in the story, the main characters are working on a system that combines gamification and education together to promote faster learning, which is a similar paradigm.
Bill was so much like me in many ways, so I connected almost immediately with the tale. It focuses on someone who is keen to do really well at their job, but whose current time management system has started failing him. He finds himself in trouble in an organisation that is going through a bunch of restructures (cost-cutting), and all of a sudden he questions his own ability to provide for his family. Now getting better at time management is absolutely critical to his life. This puts him on an arc that drives desperation, frustration, then experimentation, analysis and eventually victory.
I thought it was really clever how in the early parts of the story you are trying to guess which concepts are the important ones. Like Bill (the main character), you don't know what is right or wrong yet. You are shown some concepts by others, and have to think about them to determine if they will actually work. He evaluates them on his learning journey, and so do you as the reader.
I really think the way Francis has broken down the concepts of time management into 'ladders' or 'fundamentals' is the right idea. It allows you to select whatever technology you like to fill the gap, as long as it does that 'function' adequately.Read more ›
