Once he was well enough to leave the hospital Aaron has lived in isolation at Malfleur, a beautiful but overgrown mansion. He had a tragic accident resulting in scarring from burns over his body making him look beastly, far from his previous super handsome rich playboy good looks. Over time Billy brings life and hope back to Aaron. We see a sweeter side to Aaron while his outward gruff ways don’t fool Billy. Can Billy’s curiosity save Aaron? Can Billy show Aaron the truth?
I LOVED this book. I LOVED these characters. I knew that the truth would come out about many things and when they did, it was a page-turner! Two things stand out to me: one being that gaslighting was involved. I admit I had to look up that word, but it is critical to the plot. Secondly, if you’re reading a fairy tale why not have a “Mrs. Delphi” as in the “Oracle of Delphi” with wise and knowing prophesies. Right? I volunteered to review this book through Gay Romance Reviews and give it high ratings especially if you like Beauty & the Beast as well as M/M romance between really wonderful men.
He rides his bike up to the top of a steep hill in a wealthy neighborhood every day to train for his upcoming bike ride. One day, he stops at the top of the hill and spots some beautiful pink roses growing on one of the properties. He cuts one of roses and is caught by someone on the property and accused of being a thief.
“Aaron” has caught a thief on his property. He is beyond angry. He demands that the young man come up to his property and work to make up for stealing one of his roses. Yet he offers to pay Billy for his time.
Billy is in awe of this handsome man behind the half mask. He happily works on the property and fixes things while trying to befriend Aaron.
This is a spin on Beauty and the Beast. Billy is nerdier than a beauty at this time of his life. Aaron is embarrassed by scars left by a car accident. He does not trust easily and has an advisor who makes him doubt everyone. Billy is a sweetheart. He loves his monster flicks, he will do anything for anyone, and gives his all.
This story caught me from the first page and kept my interest until the very last page. I loved it. I loved the characters.
Aaron was so incredibly gruff and yet so charming with his "I'll show you, show you how much I want you gone...by buying you expensive work shirts and bringing you meals and spending time with you. *Hmph. Let that be a lesson to you." I loved him. His vulnerability felt real too, not just because of the physical disfigurement, but the weight he was carrying regarding what he couldn't remember and the grief over the loss of his father. His character was simple and yet still moving.
Finding his counterpart in the irrepressible Billy was sweet and fun because Billy couldn't find a way to stay mired in negativity despite his circumstances. It wasn't until the villain stuck their nose into things that he found a pain and hurt he hadn't yet truly experienced. Thankfully his indomitable will got the kick in the pants it needed by a little tea-and-chat session with their resident "witch". His discoveries meant a whole lot of freedom and I loved seeing that bit come together.
The villain was very predictable, both in who they were, their motivations, and their methods. But even with all that predictability, it wasn't annoying. It was slightly over dramatic, but it fit with the tradition of big, dramatic confrontations marked in all fairy tales. Everything worked out, obviously, and the bad guy actually saw justice, amends were made, and Aaron finally found healing, confidence, and freedom. Thanks to Billy's heart and spirit they were both able to get the exact "ending" they deserved. I loved this story and I can't wait to see what's next for this little town with its own brand of magic.

Billy is a young man who loves a good horror movie and story his room is full of posters from the films, his friends are away at college and he stays in Ever After to care for his mother who has bipolar. To keep fit he rides his bike up the tallest hill in Ever After where all the rich live, true to the Beauty and the Beast trope he is at the top and recovering from his bike ride when he notices beautiful roses in a garden and decides to pick one not realising the home owner is on the other side of the wall watching him.
Suffice to say he cuts off a rose and meets the reclusive home owner Aaron who sets him to work in the grounds of the house in recompense for taking a rose.
Billy agrees and is intrigued by this gorgeous man hiding himself away.
The story moves fluently as Billy and Aaron grow to become friends then more and Billy learns why Aaron hides himself away. Billy is open, kind and honest and wants only to help, he is sweet natured against surly at first Aaron. A wonderful story I read this story in one day and was reluctant to put it down at all and finished it in the early hours. A truly enchanting story in Ever After and I’ve already purchased other stories by Tara Lain from this town which I can’t wait to read.
Billy is an absolutely adorable character, intrepid yet sensitive.
Aaron a really lovable "beast"
In addition dogs, a fairy godmother, who is actually an absolutely adorable grandma replacement
A really exciting, very mysterious plot that will keep you in suspense until the end
A villain that one would like to strangle from the first appearance in the book. The story develops slowly, and thus gives the opportunity to get into the MCs very well.
It's not a book overloaded with sex, which I really liked, the main focus is on the story. The existing sex scenes are hot though.
If you like well-told fairy tales that can actually happen, you will love this book. It's magical but also very realistic
