Editorial Reviews

The Big Yin turns Easy Rider and follows a lifelong dream as he makes the iconic 2488 mile journey from Chicago to Santa Monica. With his unrivalled ability to tell a great story, he brings to life both the big and small moments of American history: the world changing events and the comic asides.

Billy Connolly has such obvious affection for U.S. culture that this documentary couldn't fail to be a treat to watch. Starting his journey in Chicago, he takes a leisurely trip through the States on his way toward California, always making time to highlight the many charms of Route 66: not just the obvious landmarks, but plenty of fascinating places that lie just off the beaten track. He really does justice to the wide open spaces, the cultural riches and the engineering marvels of the American past and present. Connolly's enthusiasm is such that if you've never travelled Route 66, this series will make you want to seek out each and every sight for yourself. Not to be missed.

I ASSUMED IT WAS USA. DO NOT ASSUME! I didn't read closely enough. Oh well. I hate to downgrade the rating though... I watched it on pbs originally and it was wonderful! Was buying this for a friend. Now it's a for stop.

My husband and I really enjoyed watching Billy Connolly's journey across America on Route 66. It is refreshing to see America from the prospective of a non-american's point of view. We got excited and wanted to take our own trip across America on the "Mother Road" after watching Billy's adventures! Thanks Billy, for reviving our interest in touring America !

When I ordered this item back in April I scoured the listing to see if it was the European version. No warnings so I ordered it and waited for time to sit down and watch it. Now I find out that is a Region B disc and that my window to return it expired a month ago. But now I see a warning on the listing. Thanks Amazon. That was a $46 lesson.

As a yank who lived in Blighty for many years my main exposure to Billy's humor was way back in the 80's/ 90's, and I was and still am a huge fan. But as an American who spent some time on route 66 - for example as a kid when my folks drove the wrong way from West to go live East - I see his treatment of 66 a little differently than the average Brit probably does. The best parts first, being Billy's side trip to Monument Valley which impressed and was very well done, and beautifully photographed. Also very well done was his insight into the development and treatment of Chicago. But there are more gripes for me than good points. One problem is that Billy does not explain much about the road itself and the changes it underwent over many years; there are fleeting shots of Oatman and Sitgreaves Pass with no explanation. Arguably that Arizona stretch provides the most historic and relatively intact portion of the older alignments. Some of the most interesting spots like the Painted Desert and Two Guns were missed out. Painted Desert and Two Guns are now on private land and difficult to access, so I can understand why the producers may have avoided any treatment there. Billy's male v. female portrayal of the Meteor Crater "hole" struck us as being just a little strange, and Billy has a tendency to prolonged laughing at his own jokes, which has become a tad annoying over time. But my main gripe relates to perhaps the producers themselves, and not so much Billy. It's interesting that the producers apparently wanted to portray a positive American view, and Billy's pro-American enthusiasm is quite evident. Unfortunately the somewhat controversial elements are avoided or glossed over.Read more ›

I made the mistake of not reading the fine print. It looks as though this disc is from the U.K. and so the format is not compatible with a lot of players in North America. It does not work in my PS3 nor in my friend`s BluRay player. The main menu will come up, but you can not get the movie to play, nor can you play the episodes separately. I recommend making sure you have a player that will play all regions for Blu Rays if you order.

A fun ride on Route 66. I appreciate this perspective. As for the negative reviews, they are mostly about the functionality of the DVD's they received, and not the movie itself.
