Billy May was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1916. At school he learned to play the brass bass (tuba), trombone and trumpet, and performed not only in several of the school bands but also with outside groups. At first, his regular instrument was the trombone but gradually he gave preference to the trumpet. On completing his education, he simply increased his involvement in music and earned some extra money by transcribing from records the arrangements of tunes played by the popular bands of the day. In doing this, he learned the basics of arranging for a dance band and began to make arrangements for the bands for whom he was playing. The made for radio recordings offered here make an interesting comparison with Billy May's commercial records of the 1950s period. Whilst the same base arrangement were generally used, the soloists had freedom to improvise. There is also a comparison to be made between the performance by May's studio orchestra made up of the cream of Los Angeles session musicians and that of his road band where the majority of the musicians were relatively unknown youngsters. In fact, the performances sounds just as exciting and original in the hands of the youngsters as they did perform by the seasoned studio professionals. A worthwhile Jasmine issue of interest to all Billy May and general Big Band fans which also contains titles not recorded commercially. 2CD set spans 109 minutes.
