NNEDI OKORAFOR, born to Igbo Nigerian parents in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 8, 1974, is an author of fantasy and science fiction for both adults and younger readers. Her Tor.com novella Binti won the 2015 Hugo and Nebula Awards; her children's book Long Juju Man won the 2007-08 Macmillan Writer's Prize for Africa; and her adult novel Who Fears Death was a Tiptree Honor Book. Nnedi Okorafor’s books include Lagoon (a British Science Fiction Association Award finalist for Best Novel), Who Fears Death (a World Fantasy Award winner for Best Novel), Kabu Kabu (a Publisher's Weekly Best Book for Fall 2013), Akata Witch (an Amazon.com Best Book of the Year), Zahrah the Windseeker (winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for African Literature), and The Shadow Speaker (a CBS Parallax Award winner). Her adult novel The Book of Phoenix (prequel to Who Fears Death) was released in May 2015; the New York Times called it a "triumph". Her novella Binti will be released in late September 2015 and her young adult novel Akata Witch 2: Breaking Kola will be released in 2016.

Binti is an essential character to read about, period. I am so impressed, grateful, and humbled. Please, please read this book. It needs to be read by so many, for so many reasons. This book was beyond a great read, it was both a journey of reading, and a journey of self. I am beyond thrilled to have read this brilliantly conceived series. It has so much to offer. It is a tale that I will keep with me, for all of time. When you read this series, you will understand.

For me, Binti is that in us which seeks to learn, to understand the truths that are at the core of life, to truly know herself. For me, she is a beautiful representation of our higher self. That which is attainable for all of us. Yet like all things worthy of striving for, there is a cost. It is pushing oneself beyond that which we have been taught, using prior teachings to seek for ourselves. Opening, shedding a portion of self to make way for that which we deem worthy to add to ourselves. This is beauty of growth.

Thus, the real wisdom we can attain through the gain and true, untainted understanding of this sought knowledge is both a comfort, yet a journey that is life-long. Binti, as most, fights for her wisdom through her insecurities, those who will try to doubt, and feed fears. Her unwavering faith in love is an excellent testament to the power of both faith and love. Giving these things to others, teaching faith, love, and hard-earned knowledge that includes all is a blessing to all.

I, with great respect, wish to thank Nnedi Okorafor for all that she's inspired in me through my interpretation of this book, series, and her other works. I feel truly humbled by her wisdom, and await the coming of her future works with gratitude.

A Phenomenal Conclusion to the Binti Trilogy!

Nnedi Okorafor concludes the Binti trilogy in "Binti: The Night Masquerade". The story begins almost exactly where the previous novella left off, with Binti caught in a fresh conflict between the Khoush and Meduse while her home burns and her awakened Enyi Zinariya abilities disorient her. Okorafor perfectly captures this disorientation and chaos at the beginning, setting the tone for the revelations of latter half of the novella. "The Night Masquerade" continues to develop the world that Okorafor established in the first novella, offering a middle path to conflict and a magical way of seeing the harmony in nature. Additionally, Okwu and Mwinyi are delightful in their interactions with each other and add more charm to that world. Okorafor writes, "Binti was change, she was revolution, she was heroism" (pg. 137). In this, she perfectly summarizes the themes of all three books. While this book addresses some heavy issues, Okorafor also includes some humorous scenes that recall the anarchic style of Douglas Adams. Oomza Uni is a limitless source of characters and possibilities and, though Okorafor may have finished Binti's story, I hope she returns to this wonderful world in future stories.

Oh my! The Binti trilogy has been a wonderful journey. I will not reveal a thing, for that would spoil the joy and sorrow. I have smiled and giggled, and tears have also come. The observation is beautiful and the writing engaging, but it's also gentle and subtle. It creeps up in you in a way mere sci-fi rarely can, and that makes it a wonder. So many populist traps are avoided yet the writing us mature and creative. This is a book I can safely recommend to my daughter (an 11 year old booklover) but also my adult friends. Thank you Nnedi. The book is a great story about humanity and humans struggling to find their place in live and to handle change and loss. The story, for the most part, develops slowly but it is well told and Nnedi Okoafor takes just as much time to tell the story as required - it never gets boring but it definitely isn't hectic story telling either. Binti herself is an awesome character and the world that she lives in is a very interesting place. With its African background the story adds a fairly unique, well told perspective to SciFi literature.

The language is beautiful, the mix and changeability of characters is amazing, and I love how Binti changes and reacts to every new event. I always look forward to reading Nnedi's stories. They finish far too quickly but that may be because I get so absorbed into the story I binge read.
I enjoy the African woman sheroe who has aspects of me and other women around me. I am awed by the imaginative blend of nature and technology. Wow what an imagination! Altogether, this makes for my favourite type of reading African sci-fi fantasy.
