Wonderful product that lacks appropriate heat defusion between the end of the grill and the battery/fan pack. First unit burned out after the second night using the fire pit. Sent back to amazon and ordered replacement plus a heat shield. My solution may not be the prettiest but it should help eliminate battery burn out. Oh and biolote doesn’t offer replacement battery/fans

Awesome...when taking variables into consideration

UPDATED: 3 years later and I must say, this thing keeps chugging along and everyone who enjoys a fire with us asks "Where do I get one of these?". Everything below still holds true except my thoughts on a few things have changed/improved. (See #'s 3, 4 and 5) - Updating to 5 stars based on how many awesome times we've had with this Firepit by our side. We've taken this on 8+ camping trips and it'd held up great.

We've had ours for about 6 months now and have used it every other week or so on the patio and a few times at the beach/camping. There's little to no smoke once you have good combustion (look it up, not joking, understanding this will help you realize that most complaints are due to variables and not the device itself). We've had about 6 friends buy their own once they hung out with our firepit. So maybe we're doing something right. (See below)

1. Fueling the fire: Use well-dried wood (not heavy wet/dense wood). We use birch wood. Pine would work, but not oak etc. The cords at HD are small and easy to manage. This makes the most substantial difference in our fire experience.

2. Building the fire: Be a good boy/girl scout and start your fire small and build it incrementally. This reduces smoke and gets to peak combustion faster.

3. Managing the fire: Adjust the fan as you add new logs and logs burn down... duh (see combustion). Try to keep the logs a few inches from the metal plate that's on the fan. The smaller birch wood cords make this very easy. We use a 24 in metal fire stick to turn and move the logs during our burns.

UPDATED: We grabbed the Biolite fire stick to help move the wood around so it burns more completely, this tool was a nice enhancement to the experience. One could do this with a metal stick or fireplace poker if you have one already, but we didn't. The Biolite one is really well designed and not huge so it stores nicely with our
Firepit.

4. Build quality: we've had no problems with the fan or battery but were in the early deliveries so perhaps something has changed. So far so good. We did experience rust as we are in a marine environment, so everything metal rusts that's not stainless. Our solution; I sanded down the box and then repainted it using black "Header paint" for car exhaust manifolds. This is serious high temp paint and it has held up pretty well since. 90% reduction in rust.

UPDATED - We had an engineering friend recommend we keep the battery pack upwind when possible. This helps keep the breeze on the battery and the system cooler and ideally help the Firepit to last longer. Makes sense to me, so we do this for each fire. Firepit rusted again, but we don't care because it's a Firepit and the extreme conditions are going to affect the paint, bottom line. It's about the fire, not the paint.

5. UPDATED The App: is actually REALLY great. At first, I didn't want to look at my phone while enjoying a fire with friends and family, but controlling the fan via Bluetooth is magical. Really, it's magic to kids and everyone else who's first experiencing the Firepit. It's really nice to just stay in the chair and manage the burn via the app. It's incredibly easy to use and very reliable.

6. Cleaning/Storage: Easy. We let it burn down, then the next day I dump the ash into the trash. I flip the cover and use it more like a bag and put it in our outdoor bins. Keeps it all nice and tidy.

I was sooooo excited to purchase my BioLite FirePit. The ability to have a portable campfire that can burn both wood or charcoal AND you can cook on was a perfect solution for our camping needs. In theory, this Firepit is amazing. It does lite easily, looks pretty, burns both wood or charcoal, and has an easily adjustable rack for cooking. We have made S’Mores, Hotdogs, Foil packs and even steaks on this. Unfortunately, it rusts. Badly. We’ve used ours on three camping trips in 3 months. I’m so disappointed in how quickly it rusted. Instructions say to wipe it down if it gets wet. Which we do. But let’s be honest. When camping, things get wet. A lot. I really wanted to love this Firepit as it checked all the boxes for me, but it looks like it’s going to be a $200 rusty piece of trash instead. If BioLite could make this out of a more durable material (perhaps stainless steel) it would be a win. For now... it’s two thumbs down.

Battery unit does not turn on or charge

No phone number to called BioLite even though they tell you if battery unit does not charge to contact them. Sent two emails, no answer no reply this product is not worth the money that they're asking for it

Fire pit works very well, I'd say 90% smoke reduction. The unit is rusting where the fire has burned off the paint and it is relatively thin metal, so I'm worried it will rust out in a year or so.

So hot it warped

Warped under it's own heat after about 4 uses. Now it's useless as a camping item and has been downgraded to burning scraps. Feeding air for a clean burn is a great idea, but that makes it hotter meaning the metal can't be so thin or it will warp. It was a waste of money for me.

Wonderful small firepit. Smaller than I thought, but nicely sized for easy handling and carrying. Love the mesh sides so everyone can see the flames. Currently using smaller birch wood, which fits nicely. 3 pieces to start, then we add more wood as they burn down. The adjustable fan keeps flame and embers under control. The 2 highest fan settings are pretty loud, but we haven't needed them. Low and medium fan settlings are perfect and nearly noiseless. The Android app closes unexpectedly often or sometimes can't find the firepit to connect to. After a few tries, it works. Overall, I'm pleased with the price and features. App needs work.

18 months of no use and still working like a charm!

Update: Nov 2020....So, USB Blower just sat for 18 months...based on last post. I figured I would at least use the base to start a little fire period with the USB still attached. I put the wood in, the lighted a paper towel, push the button just to test it... Boom... OMG!

Other than a Little smoke during the first startup, the actual USB blower held a charge for 18 months solid!

Highly, highly, highly recommend this product!

This is based on the USB blower and the last 18 months!

Update... everyone else is right. The Bluetooth Unit gets very Hot! Definitely a design flaw! Burned my hands trying to remove; as it was starting to melt and burn. Removed (1) star for poor design in that. Otherwise, still Smokeless! Ok... I don't normally do reviews on Amazon. I did not get this product for free.

After 45 minutes of initially starting it up, having a roaring flame going... There was a little smoke initially dot-dot-dot as expected...but once it gets going, there is absolutely no smoke... The heat is intense enough for me to move back 3 feet from the burner. Needless to say I'm very happy with the product. Now... let's see how long it lasts!

When this was first launched on Kickstarter I knew it was going to be good and it is. Make setting up camp on the beach, by the river or even in the garden a breeze. Cooks great, looks great can't say enough good about it. Invest in the solar bag as well but does come with a simple rain cover. 100% thumbs up.

Cools down in 15-20 minutes, leave time for that at the end of the evening. Clean down with a dry brush and don't leave ash in the unit for best longevity. Clean the cooking grill with a BBQ brush and warm soapy water. If you get the solar cover as well that trickle charges the Unit so its ready when you need it. This also means that whilst the fire is not generating the power the solar is so you can use the output from the fan system to charge gadgets or just plug your USB into the solar panel to charge during the day.

Firstley I love biolite. I own a few of there products and I think there great value. when I noticed this I jumped the gun before I read into the description and have had to return this. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT GENERATE POWER. unlike other Biolite products this one does not generate power, instead you charge the box at home or using the solar panel or other device, and then that powers the fan system which does make a lovley fire. however if you know the biolite brand and buy this thinking you can go camping with a firepit that will power your holiday you will be sadly mistaken. you can charge devices from this but there are better power banks for this. I would buy this again if they made it so it generated power from the fire, which again as they are well known for there smaller fire stove that does generate power from the fire I am very surprised that this doesn't. - side note amazon were very helpful in getting this returned :)

Great concept but they ALL fail

Doesn't work. This is the 3rd one I've bought after returning the rest and it worked at first but has now failed (won't charge or turn on) and Amazon have closed the return window after 30 days. Despite it being an electrical item and therefore has a year warranty. Amazon's postage allowance for returns doesn't cover half the price either.

It's a great concept but a poorly built product. I just hope that someone else brings out a version that works.

I am so impressed with this product. I can honestly say it is the best addition to our house. We initially were looking for an easy form of patio heating and after experiencing the usual gas fire pit In one of my friends house we started our search for a similar product. This is great - for camping and for just sitting around in the garden - wherever. Saw it originally on Kickstarter a few years ago, great to see its a great price for Prime members. Really solidly made and the built in bellows and fan unit really help when your wood is wet or it's been raining and difficult to get a fire going. Not totally smoke free, but not surprising. Great that you can see the flames through the mesh on the sides - creates a real feeling of an open fire pit but without all the mess that goes with it. Remarkable bit of tech that gets a fire going on little to no time and with one match. Can't wait to take it camping when we're able to.
