Back does not get hot, nor do the sides. Does not seem to be any risk of burning your hands/body or starting a fire. Overall - very impressed, would suggest item to anyone!
You will find it at lowes or Home Depot in the plumping section, I put two pieces behind the heater and I sleep worry free at night... it does an excellent job heating a 12x12 room on its lowest setting.. yep you read this right "lowest setting"
I bought this unit after researching, and trying, several other heaters for our daughter's room. Her room is always much cooler than our masterbedroom. I didn't like the other portables because they were too noisy. Even though my daughter would appear to sleep through the noise, I figured it couldn't be good for her and had to interupt, on some level, her sleep.
I went with this heater because of all of the reviews raving about how silent this heater is, which is true on some level. During the operation, it is virtually silent, however, there is a clicking noise upon startup and shutdown of the heating elements. I didn't knock this item with a less than five star review because all of the heaters I have tried click on and off. This heater at least doesn't blow a fan while it's on so on a certain level, it is all around quieter.
But if you are a light sleeper and don't sleep with some kind of white noise to drown out noise, this unit does click loud enough to either keep you awake, or wake you up. To clarify what I mean about the clicking upon startup; unless you have this heater on an always on setting, it will cycle on and off depending on what level you have it set on. The lower the setting, the more frequently it will click on and off. If you are in a mid to small size room, you will have to have it on a very low setting, otherwise it will melt you down after an hour or so because it heats so well. This is when it will bother you most if you are a light sleeper, because it clicks everytime it cycles on and off.
Hope this review helps those understand that aspect of this unit.
The back definitely gets too hot to hang on a drywall (regular household) wall. If you were to tile an area for it, that could be a long-term solution. We were happy to let it sit on the floor and enjoyed the radiant portion of the heat on our legs under the kitchen table.
Now I will have to return it and I am not looking forward to the hassle. I will definitely try a different model - I very rarely give second chances and not to a brand I am unfamiliar with.
