But, honestly, it's worth it. I love this bag. It's iconic. I've had 1st grade students, principals of schools, random moms in vans whose kids were freaking out, librarians, campers.... EVERYONE feels comfortable getting excited and telling me how much they love this bag. It's worth it just for the instant connection people feel.. and you leave a memorable impression! I owe part of my success as a substitute teacher to this bag, hahaha. Everyone would get so excited when they saw it!
That being said, this is a great backpack for a child and we have gotten countless compliments on it. Everyone wants to know where we found it. couldn't be happier!
There is not a whole lot of room for books or extra compartments in this backpack, it is more for a binder and a single textbook plus pens/pencils/crayons. Also the masks that come with it are expectedly cheap. The bag itself, however, is very well made and the zippers seem sturdy. I have had this since Christmas 2012 and it is holding up nicely.
written 2/14/15: this got some light use over that school year, we used it off & on w/just the folders, leaving the binder at home/school when feasible to do so and since then we've used it here & there (maybe once a month) for overnight trips to store an outfit/toys/whatever he wanted to take and it's held up pretty decently. It may not look perfect but it still zips up, etc :) That being said I still feel the same way about the price point. Too much for what it is-if it held a full sized binder I'd have NO complaints :)
The space was perfect, the insulation was an amazing and wonderful surprise, the bottles didn't condensate because of the insulation (which was aweseom because it kept our paper goods safe), and the straps were big enough for an adult (and a not-so-skinny one, at that!). It was also very nice to be carrying a backpack rather than a messenger bag, because in the past messenger bags have: gotten hit by practically every passerby, fallen off my shoulder while I was leaning over looking at things, been too heavy on my shoulders and made it even worse to walk around for hours. This bag was out of the way, and the fact that it was balanced on both shoulders made it much lighter on my back and easier to walk around with.
All-in-all, our con experience wouldn't have been nearly as nice without this backpack.
