Aina are one of the leading lights of Spanish post-hardcore, and evidence of the ocean-straddling appeal of the DC scene around Fugazi. The mixture of dissonance and melody, as well as the guitar breaks on Bipartite, recall the later output of Bluetip, for whom Aina profess admiration and with whom they have shared a stage in Spain. The "skittering" guitar style employed at the start of Fugazi's song "Margin Walker" puts in an appearance here too. Some detect a similarity to Jawbox - yet another DC reference - but I haven't heard anything by them, so I can't comment. However, Aina throw in an unexpected ingredient - a love of AC/DC - which endows Bipartite with great chunky riffs and a medium pace. For all that though, Bipartite is not hard rock or metal, but heavy indie rock. The lyrics are in English and are sung, not screamed; the singer's voice is pleasant but his diction is sometimes indistinct. There are some fine melodies on Bipartite and good use of the quiet-louder-very loud dynamics employed by Nirvana. J Robbins does a typically good production job and the record sounds unforced. All in all, Bipartite could well appeal if you like Sparta, Rival Schools, Hundred Reasons, Bluetip or similar bands.

Yes, folks, I'm going to keep this one simple. Aina is a great rock, post-hardcore, indie, etc. band. Here's the clue: if you like Jawbox, Burning Airlines(J. Robbins' current band), or Shiner, then you are going to love this album. It's moderately rocking with great dynamics throughout. Not too hard, not too soft, it's just right. I consider this a very solid purchase. Buy it.
