Many good tunes for all levels of play. There is no Discography - The CD's are complete Verve Master Takes which includes standards, none are included here - Complete Savoy, Complete Dial master takes individualy or combined. Of course you can also download indivdiual tracks by Parker or later day players playing his songs.
In The Bird Book you find 16 tunes that aren't in the Omnibook (Dexterity!), but in the latter there are 8 compositions that somehow didn't make the cut here, and i don't understand why great tunes like 'Diverse', 'Leap frog', 'Thriving from a riff' and 'Relaxing with Lee' have been excluded :^O
A lot of work was put in the Omnibook, and having access to 60 solo transcriptions is the true key to understand Parker's personality more in depth.
In the Bird Book some chords have been 'adjusted', but considering the above mentioned points and the fact that the legendary Omnibook goes for a few dollars less, i feel the Bird Book doesn't deserve more than 2*, especially since the author doesn't even mention the existence of the Omnibook, and calls his BBook 'one of the best learning tools for jazz improvisers'. Wow Yamaguchi! Really???
You can't compare apples and oranges. Jamey's omnibook is not the same kind of book as "The Bird Book." "The Bird Book" is a collection of "Lead Sheets" so that we musicians can play. Omnibook is a collection of transcribed solos.... If the book price is the matter, we can find some of the solo transcriptions on the internet FREE.
Don't miss the opportunity to find the re-discovered compositions, which Parker never recorded.... they are included in The Bird Book........ Don't mix up Jamey's omnibook with "The Bird Book".... It is like mixing up Boston and NYC. Take reviewer's stupid comments and stick them where the sun doesn't shine!
The author discovered less-known compositions by Charlie Parker for us. Polyphonic brass parts are also well-transcribed in The Bird Book (not found in the Omnibook which contains pitch errors.... check your pitch and train your ear!)
If you want to know more about Charlie Parker, you should get this book right away. This Charlie Parker Real book would be the perfect gift for your jazz friend.
I really appreciate the author taking the time to research less-known compositions and create the accurate scores of Confirmation, Donna Lee ..... they are better than anything else (i.e. omnibook). THIS IS THE BEST!
