Editorial Reviews

Moore's insightful novel centers on a meaningful connection between two women of different generations. Hurricane Gino is heading toward Texas, and Birdie Barnes, an older woman, is living on the island of Galveston. While walking her dog on the beach before the storm hits, she finds 26-year-old Jude, who's just been released from the hospital after a car accident that killed her friend. Jude's injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, but Birdie invites Jude back to her home to rest and shower because, "I'm tired of looking at that clump of dried blood in your hair." The two share stories as ferocious winds shake the shutters, and each senses she knows the other. Birdie, never married, has lived on the island her entire life, while Jude has moved through foster homes since she was four years old. Birdie is close to her only living relative, her adult nephew, Barry, while Jude's only friend, Casey, died in the car wreck that injured Jude. When Birdie decides to go on a cruise with friends after the hurricane has passed, she asks Jude to house-sit, and the subsequent meeting between Jude and Barry is fateful. Birdie's beautiful home and the beach town are lovely settings for the connections between women struggling with questions about their life choices. Moore brings depth and emotional punch to this utterly absorbing story of magically entwined lives. (BookLife) Publisher's Weekly

From the Author

This novel was inspired by a hurricane, an act of intimidation experienced by two friends, the beautiful island of Galveston, the untimely death of a friend, and the debutant season. Readers often ask me, "How'd you come up with that?" Well, it's always more than one thing. I wrote a blog about it, because I wanted to explain the dedication.
My friends Rev. Ronnie Green and the late Rev. Sam Shaw experienced an act of violence and racism when they were young men in high school in 1968. Some white citizens in our small hometown, to this day, would claim our community was an utopian village where everyone was treated equal. That's not true, and since I posted this incident in the blog, others have come forward to tell about their experiences. I hope the events woven into this braid of a story can inspire thought and be seen as a seamless tapestry of who we are and how we can do better. Above all things, there is hope. If one person can read it and come away with introspection and the notion that all souls are equal, I will know my time was well spent and the worthy dedication can be honored.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALL the feels. Couldn't stop thinking about the characters.
By S. Click on May 3, 2018
Oh man...I laughed, I cried, I got REALLY ticked and I was joyfull all within these 330 pages. Heck, even the dedication had tons of feels.
Everyone has a story indeed, and I'm pretty sure we all have an 'Aunt Birdie' too. We all NEED a kindred spirit like Henry, "I know there's more wrong than there is right, but I want to focus on what's right." - Henry (from this Book) Amen Henry, Amen.
Another great read by Phyllis H. Moore.
