I bought this for my wife and kids after getting them a bird and humming bird feeder that I attached the the kitchen window. So far we have seen well over 20 species of birds visiting and it’s so easy to find the birds by color. My wife sits at the kitchen table with her coffee and this book every mourning. And every time the kids see a bird they have to look it up regardless if they have seen the bird already 20 times lol..
The book it’s self is well thought out by color and gives a brief description of the species, habits, food they like, and what part of the Carolinas they Visit at certain times of year.. it’s just a great little book.

This book is a nice portable size and has very good pictures. We used this on a vacation to Hilton Head and it had dozens of birds that we saw. The only downside: the book is organized by colors of birds rather than type or size. As a result, some birds like herons have species scattered in more than one section and you have to keep flipping back and forth through many pages to figure out which one it is that you see. Also hard to figure out where to look as some birds have color only on one sex or birds look very different when young.

The book seems to contain most NC birds but we've see a couple at our feeder that we couldn't identify. It seems like the book would be easy to use since it categorizes birds by color. This categorization actually makes it harder. What color is a small bird with bright orange breast and white and brown pattern on its back? The most prominent color is the red, but the book seems to consider it brown. Birds of the same family are scattered throughout under different colors. We usually have to flip through every page to find what we are looking for. Luckily the pages flip easily, the bird pictures are always on the same side of the page, and each bird has just a two page spread (i.e. facing pages).

This book is absolutely perfect.
I recently installed several bird feeders and wanted to learn more about the birds visiting my yard. This book was EXACTLY what I wanted.
First, it is excellently organized for identifying the birds you see. It is organized by appearance: "Birds that are mostly grey. Birds that are mostly blue. Birds that are mostly brown. Birds that have prominent red areas" etc. so that when you see a bird, all you need to remember is its general appearance to quickly find it. I have identified 17 species in my yard, and each time it only took me a couple of minutes to find it in the book.
Second, the book has a very concise and interesting little bio on every bird. It lists the regions they are found in, their physical and behavioral characteristics, and then has interesting little facts about every bird.
I can't even imagine a better book for someone getting interest in bird watching.

I've had the book for about a year and have constructed a mini bird sanctuary in my yard, so this review comes from ample time reading and comparing it to what I see outside my window. As of now, I've marked over 3 dozen varieties as "spotted". (I use Post-it Notes cut into thin strips to mark the pages so as not to leave actual marks on the page.) Before being marked, my system requires three sightings, which gives me time to look carefully at each bird and ensure that the bird's distinguishing characteristics match the book. I've yet to be disappointed in the photos and descriptions that the book provides, or the very logical manner in how it's organized, first by predominant color, and then within each color section, somewhat by size -- small birds at the beginning of each color section, larger birds later (although not perfectly so I'm not sure if sizing was intentional or coincidental).
I have no larger ambitions to become a bird watcher beyond the view offered from my window, and the backyard bird area wasn't a burning desire for a new hobby, just a yard improvement modification that got a bit out of control. But with this book, I've gone from casually looking at birds to a very engaging activity on quiet mornings that amazes family and guests with the knowledge that this book has provided. I look like a trained ornithologist! And I'm amazed that over 3 dozen types of birds exist outside my suburban window. I would have never realized it without this exceptional little book.

Overall nice book. Organized by birds colors which took a bit to get use too. One section had three woodpeckers but they weren’t together. It would be good to have the type of birds in same order for each color. A friend who has several bird books and years experience with identifying local birds commented that the colors on a few common song birds seemed to be inaccurate. Overall I’m happy with the book.

My wife suggested getting this book for our entire family but was thinking about our 9 year old son that would often watch the birds outside but not know what they are (and we didn't know either). We have had the book for about 6 months now, and it has gotten a lot of use by us all. The idea to organize the book by color of the bird is absolutely ingenious and critical for a young (and not so young) bird watcher to quickly identify a bird before it flies away. In cases where a male and female do not share the same color, a small image with page a number for the other is given. For cases where the male and female share the same colors but have different markings, pictures of both are given. In some cases, an additional picture may be given if the appearance changes based on time of year. This helped us today when we thought we may have seen the "winter male" American Goldfinch which looks considerably different than his usual appearance. The author will also sometimes include additional pictures of a bird (in flight, juvenile, etc.) when he thinks it will be helpful for identification. I have been impressed with my son's ability to now identify birds by sight. The next step will be to get some feeders and try to attract an even greater variety!

Ideal pocket book .Used it every day when in the Carolinas .I liked that the birds were sectioned into colours .Not all birds that I saw were included in the book but that is because they were rarer .
