Product Description

This is a quick and easy way to make traditional British custard on the hob. You mix 2 tablespoons of powder with some sugar and milk and mix to a paste. Then add 1 pint of nearly boiling milk, and heat gently to the boil. Serve over your favorite pudding. The original flavor custard has the true English taste. I discovered Bird's Custard Powder at my local grocery. Jello discontinued making their custard mix and so the store began stocking this in its place. I'm so glad we can buy this here in America. The first reason I'm so greatly pleased is that it's ALL NATURAL, unlike the Jello brand of custard mix. Ingredients here are simple: Cornflower, salt, Annatto for color, and flavoring. (I'm assuming the flavor is natural as it doesn't say it's artificial). Also, I'm greatly pleased because it is a good flavor! And I've discovered WARM custard is delicious!! The way I make it is this way: 2 cups milk, 4 Tablespoons custard powder and 4 Tablespoons sugar. Cook according to the directions on the cannister. I use a whisk to contantly stir it, and it never scorches. When I remove it from the heat, I add 1/4 t. vanilla. I pour it into 4 custard cups. I usually eat one warm because it's so yummy! Nice cold with nutmeg sprinkled on top. This is vegetarian. I'm going to try it next with almond milk. If it works, then it would be nice for vegans too. If you are missing Jello custard, DO give Bird's a try. I like it so much, that even if Jello brought back their custard, I would stick with Bird's!

- Easy to make over the stove in a matter of minutes with milk and sugar
- Still tastes great with almond milk (wouldn't advise using vanilla flavored milk, it conflicts with the flavor of the custard)
- Tastes great over white/ vanilla cake

Cons:
- If you're American you'll need to add more sugar for a sweeter taste if that's what you're used to
- You have to keep stirring constantly until it's completely boiling, otherwise it won't turn out right

I was searching for this product specifically because I wanted to make Nanaimo Bars. In the area of the United States I live in, I've never found it. I was glad to find it available here on Amazon, and the price was fairly reasonable.
The powder made it to my home in a timely manner, and it worked wonderfully in the cookie recipe. Our Nanaimo bars tasted great! It has an expiration date of about a year from the time I bought it, so to get my money's worth, I'll need to use the whole container up in that timeframe, which shouldn't be too difficult. I know lots of people say this is just glorified corn starch with a little flavoring in it, but having the authentic flavor in the recipe was important to me, so that's mainly why I purchased it.

I was unable to obtain the powder locally. The product was sent to me very quickly and enabled me to make a recipe my daughter brought back from Vancouver. It required this specific powder. The cookie bars were delicious!I am very grateful I could find it on the Amazon site. I would order similiar products without a minutes hesitation. N Nullmeyer

I purchased this product a little while ago and just got the chance to make it this morning. Oh, what memories this brought back from my childhood in England. Even though I don't have many happy memories, this custard was my absolute favorite. We'd have it in trifles, over cake. I remember having it in school and now I can enjoy it here in my very own home. If you grew up only knowing the American vanilla pudding, this is different - it has a much more delicate flavor which I prefer. Well, I'm off to make a pound cake to accompany my custard. YUMMY, YUMMY !!! Ta Ta!! UPDATE: I refrigerated the custard and when I tasted it something was missing - that flavor of freshly made warm custard. I decided to nuke a bowl of the custard for about 30 seconds and then stirred the custard - the freshly made flavor returned so I suggest you reheat the custard before use.

How can you go wrong? This product is older than I am and I have enjoyed it since childhood. I like to make English Trifle for desert and there is no substitute for Bird's Custard. It is a wonderful comfort food. Yum!
