Review

McCormac's writing is friendly and breezy -- a pleasing blend of information presented in a readable style. --Bird Watcher's Digest

...until now there has never been a field guide dedicated solely to the Buckeye State's birds. Birds of Ohio by Jim McCormac fills the void. The abundance of information he has chocked into a 360-page field guide is amazing. --Columbus Dispatch

This field guide may be the best designed and planned guide I've ever come into contact with. It's as if the author and publisher looked at the shortcomings of all the books on the shelf and evaded the usual traps. --Greater Akron Audubon Matters

About the Author

James McCormac is a native Ohioan who become passionate about natural history at a very early age and began actively pursuing birds before he was ten years old. He has birded in nearly every state and most Canadian provinces, as well as far-flung places like the Australian Outback, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Jim served as secretary of the Ohio Bird Records Committee for seven years and is also an enthusiastic educator and writer.

This is a great book and is a must have for anyone birding in Ohio, or intending to visit Ohio to do some birding. The natural history text for each species is extremely informative and specific to Ohio. The book does a nice job of covering most of the species listed for the state (291 out of a possible 412). Especially useful are the range maps within Ohio, and the occurrence calendars. The only downfall to the book are the illustrations. The illustrations and artwork are great, but they're not as useful for identification purposes because, in many cases, they are either in awkward poses (ex: Song Sparrow) or only illustrate one plumage type for the species (ex: non-breeding plumage only for Horned Grebe)(Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have some of these illustrations hanging on my walls as art because they're that good, but wouldn't necessarily use them to illustrate identification points).

Also useful is that the birds are grouped taxomically, and there is a quick color-coded index so you can find the group you are looking for efficiently.
I think this should be on every Ohio birder's shelf. A great book overall!

This 360 page book packs as much useful info in its pages as any comparable guide that I've come across. One of the wonderful elements - and something almost completely lacking in bird field guides - is the interesting natural history information under each species. Also, the book is chock full of helpful ID tips, and in cases where confusion with other species is common, ways of separating the species is discussed in detail. The maps and seasonal bar graphs allow for understanding of the bird's status and distribution at a glance. Illustrations are pretty good, too, but apparently space limitations don't allow for the complete array of plumages to be shown for every species. Rarely do I read through a field guide, but I've found myself doing just that with this one, as the species accounts are interesting and full of facts that were new to me. Also, the introduction and best birding sites guide are most helpful. I'd highly recommend this book for any interested in Ohio's birds!

I love this book. It has both a quick find for when you are looking for a bird you have seen, then it has a detailed description of the bird and habits (songs, range of nesting, etc) as well as pictures, some of which include a picture of the female. It is easy to use, and very detailed. The book came quickly and was in great shape. Thanks!!

This book goes with me every time I am outside in Ohio. It is nice to have detailed descriptions of ONLY the birds that you are likely find in Ohio without having to struggle through the California, Texas and Florida birds (though I love to go to those places and see their birds!) The seasonal range maps are helpful and the annual time lines are very nice. The illustrations are good, but they are not consistent with one another in style and detail, having apparently been done by different artists. This sometimes makes comparisons a little tough. If I need to get better detail in order to make a certain identification I use other field guides such as Sibley. The suggested birding sites is a nice feature. I also enjoy the longer narratives of each bird that helps to identify habitats, nuances of song and other details that enrich the birding experience. The price is good for a book with so much color and the binding has held up very well for a paperback.

This book was recommended to me by a seasoned birder with our Metro Parks. He said this was his go to birding book. It is colored coded by types of birds for ease in locating birds you are looking for in the state of Ohio. It is chock full of good and detailed information on each one & where in the state they are most spotted. Has a nice detailed index in the back. Highly recommend.

We studied birds in science last year, and made good use of this book. I like the pictures (whereas in some guides, it's hard to really recognize the bird based upon the pictures alone, because of it being an illustration or not showing any variety).

The book has a lot of information on the various birds including pictures that enable us to find the bird we see without much difficulty. My husband will enjoy the book for a long time to come.

Love this book. Unfortunately, it became somewhat ruined after it got wet. So, I'm buying another one! I especially like the detailed history, range maps and occurrence information.
