Review

"Needless to say, this is not your typical birth video. In fact, this is not your typical birth in the USA, which is all the more reason that it should be shown, and often." Claudia Stearns - Doula

"If I only had one video to show my clients from now untl forever, this would be it." Nancy Wainer - midwife --Claudia Stearns, Training Director, BACE

"I spent most of my life as a fighter pilot and a paratrooper. I have no idea why I thought this video would interest me, but was positively captivated by it. "The music and the camera shots created an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility that just grew on me. If you are contemplating a home birth, this video will give you the motivation, insight, and confidence you need to start working seriously toward it. If you are not, it will enlighten you. Birth can be a joy that brings out the best in a family. It isn't the anxiety and discomfort many of us had always taken for granted." --Terry Buettner, Hendersonville, NC

"As a childbirth educator, doula, and mother, I've watched countless birth videos. Without question, BIRTH DAY is the best video currently on the market. I live in the USA where in most cases birth has become more of a medical event than a life event. But BIRTH DAY gives viewers a chance to see a completely normal, natural home waterbirth, with the mother's family (including her other young children) in attendance. Viewers will be given the gift of spending a "birth day" with Naoli Vinaver Lopez and her family at their beautiful home in Xalapa, Mexico. To witness the love and support Naoli and her family share during her labor and birth, combined with beautiful music and narration, is nothing short of inspiring. I was so inspired that I too, had a home waterbirth! "Every pregnant woman and her family needs to see this video. It was also one of the few birth videos I felt was appropriate to show my then-3-year old son as we prepared for the birth of his brother. Basically, it should be required viewing for anyone planning to ever give birth!" --Ami Burns, Chicago, IL USA

This should be required viewing for every parent-to-be. Sure, it's short, but it packs a lot of punch into that ten minute running time. Our culture is inundated with negative images of childbirth and labor: screaming women in hospital gowns, laying flat on their backs as they're wheeled at breakneck speeds down hospital corridors, demanding drugs from harried doctors and saying horrible (yet hilarious!) things to/about their husbands--stop me if you've heard this one before. We're convinced that's this is the way it always was, and the way it will always have to be. The assumption that birth is a horrific medical event is so ingrained in our collective cultural psyche that the thought that women's bodies are perfectly designed for the birthing process seems revolutionary. It shouldn't be.

Could you imagine what the world would be like if birth experiences like Naoli's were what we expected birth to be like? If the images of screaming women in stirrups were NOT the cultural norm? Would we look at the experience of childbirth as something to be dreaded and endured, or something wonderful and magical, to be celebrated? If you were preparing for your own labor and birth, what kind of birth images and stories would you want to be surrounded by?

Naoli's birth is beautiful, powerful, and moving. If you're looking for a birth-positive and woman-positive birth story, this is the best I've ever seen. I recommend it unconditionally.

I first watched this video when it was out on VHS long ago when I had my own fears about childbirth. The whole process of birth that is shown is very gentle, natural, safe, and relaxed. As a childbirth educator, I have found that this video is very empowering for women to watch and reassures them that their bodies are 100% capable of birthing without intervention.

Birth Day shows just how perfectly a woman's body is created to give birth naturally and normally - doing what it needs to do in its own time to bring about a perfect, healthy, calm birth. Included in the DVD is not only footage of the labor and birth itself, but also interviews with those involved on the day of birth. We can see how spiritual a birth day is for all those involved, especially mom.

I highly recommend this DVD along with the most excellent "Birth As We Know It" (2006) and the DVD that comes in the msut-read book "Gentle Birth Choices" (2005) by Harper & Arms. Together every mom can find peace and unmatched joy in birth.

I thought that I was ordering a movie that showed multiple women giving birth at home. What this actually is, is 1 woman, who gives birth at home in Mexico. And they actually only show an 11 minute clip of her in labor, and then the actual birth. Any natural laboring sounds she made was covered up by music.

The rest of the DVD (which makes up the majority of the content) is all interviews with her, her husband, her parents, and another mom who watched this before giving birth.

I am very disappointed with this DVD, as I ordered it to watch, then show to my children to prepare them for our upcoming homebirth. It's getting returned & I'll search for a better one.

I found this a lovely birth to watch, but investment wise for my classes it was not good value, it was very short and was not very educational for women wanting a natural birth in hospital, it focussed only on one personal home birth story briefly.

I LOVE this video! it is so peaceful & beautiful & shows how with the right setting & the right support people natural birth can be transcendant and romantic. I have all my doula clients watch this birth. 1st they watch BOBB so that they can have a glimpse of what they'll be dealing with if they're having a hospital birth, then I have them watch BirthDay so they can be left with a beautiful image of what their birth can be like.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the cost. The birth footage is only 11 min, with about 30 min of interviews. I understand that I should just be grateful for Naomi sharing her lovely birth with the world, but I imagine more people would buy it if it were a bit less costly.

This is a beautiful film, I've used it for years in my birth doula and birth education work. It's my very favorite birth film because it shows what is possible for birth when it's uninterrupted and calm. Women see the film and think, wow, maybe I could do that? The family is lovely, the setting is absolutely stunning and it's very reassuring and positive. Every pregnant mother and partner should see this film.

My big problem is this: Love Delivers, which offers it for $10 cheaper than Amazon, is terrible. It's been over a month and I've sent numerous emails, and my order still hasn't arrived from them. They don't even respond to my emails. I will have to cancel, submit a claim with Amazon and reorder through Amazon directly if I want a copy. Huge bummer and hassle.

Even if you are birthing in a hospital you will want to watch this very moving video of what birth can be. It will give you confidence in the birthing process and cause you to think about choices you have made for your birth. It will cause you to think of birth from a more holistic viewpoint. I give this video to all my clients to watch. I am a birth doula. They all give me the same feedback. This video is a beautiful portrayal of birth.

This DVD is my all time favorite, I'm a doula so I've watched many different birth movies but this one it's my all time favorite, always gets me and find myself tearing up, because it's so raw and beautiful and it shows what a perfectly natural process should be, if mommy and baby are healthy and coping well, really there's no need for so many intervention, trust your body and be with the ones you love and you can achieve a wonderful birth experience
