The Birth of Football's Modern 4-3 Defense: The Seven Seasons That Changed the NFL is a historical guide covering one of the key developments in professional football—the transition from the 5-2-4 defense to the 4-3-4. T. J. Troup had unprecedented access to coaches and players from this era, as well as extensive footage from the actual games. This comprehensive review and analysis of these seven seasons, from 1953 through 1959, breaks down every team’s coaching staff, player personnel, and season statistics. In addition, Troup has combined extensive research and actual game footage to recreate the key game of the season for each team, bringing the action, intensity, and importance of the game to life. This book will entertain and inform all fans and historians of professional football, especially those interested in the early development of the modern defense.

Well done, Coach!
I am younger coach who is trying to further my knowledge on the sport we all love. I read countless coaching books, watch over priced coaching videos and am an active member on some online coaching forums.
I struggled to read this book. I bought this EXPENSIVE (45 BUCKS) book to learn how the modern 4-3 came to be. I feel like the book should more have been titled the bottom half of the cover page the seven seasons that changed the nfl or something like that.
It took me three different times to attempt to "tackle" this book. I could not finish this book. No disrespect but I don't care who the players are during the time period or play by play of certain games. There were pictures of players of the era but to my knowledge ZERO diagrams(I didn't finish it so not 100%) on the 4-3 or how the 5-2 did this and that to become the 4-3.
I'm just a simple football coach and maybe this is just too old school historian for me to "tackle" to get through it and understand the evolution that the author is making.
I will be returning this book.
To the author please understand that I could tell the relentless detail and effort that must have been put forth ,but it just didn't click for me.
Please keep writing books on the greatest sport on earth it I definitely under attack right now. I might still buy them but I could return them too :) keep them KISS for some of us.
If you are a pro football fan, this book will definitely give you an insight into pro football defensive strategy from a bygone era. If you enjoy pro football history, this book should be in your collection!
