I bought it a few hours ago and have already read the whole book due to it's easy readability. I will keep it on hand for reference and am instituting the audio practices this evening. The narrator has a very soothing voice and the music is very calming. I am looking forward to using this additionally for anxiety and doing my best to avoid PPD.
This is my 3rd child, the first being born with an epidural and 38 hours of labor. I got very bad ppd after the birth and healing took some time. My second was born naturally and I wish I had known to go this route at the time. It would have been so much easier! I healed very fast after my natural birth, no tears, was very alert and walking around after a couple hours. The baby was also very alert and ready to nurse right away. This time I will have a Doula who is trained in Hypnotherapy and Reflexology, and I'm positive that with her support I will have a healthy, natural birth, free from anxiety, fear, and tension.
It would be wrong to assume that the book is only relevant to women who are aiming for a "natural" birth. The techniques are easily adaptable and can be applied to all sorts of situations in which stress, fear, anxiety, pain or discomfort might otherwise be experienced, so they can be used when medical interventions are required or planned.
I would also recommend the book to hypnotherapists who work with childbirth preparation. There's always something new to learn from other people's work and Paola Bagnall obviously knows her stuff, after years of practicing as a hypnotherapist and, prior to that, teaching A-level biology.
The book is fantastic value for money as it includes a CD (with Paola's soothing voice), which makes the techniques she describes even easier to use. A lovely gift for a pregnant relative or friend.
She gives an honest attempt to calmly inform and comfortably support and focus on the positives of childbirth. The hypnotherapy side is clear and works well with first time mums or second, third or even forth pregnancies!
I was luckily enough to have easy pregnancies but this book would have given me something to focus on and I would advise any mum to be to get this book, use the CD and enjoy the wonderful experience.
