Great book and concept

My sister read this first and then recommended it to me. We both enjoy amateur psychology and what makes people tick. There were many moments while reading, that I stopped and thought, "that's why I do that" or "that's why I'm like my father" or today's version is "that's why my wife acts like that."

A short time later, I met the author when I was working at the ABC television affiliate in Pittsburgh. Dr. Leman was to be the guest on our live local talk show. I met him in the green room and told him how my sister gave me her book after she read it. He seemed to ignore me and walk towards his briefcase. How rude! I thought, this guy may be a genius but he lacks certain social skills. He then pulled one of his books from the briefcase, asked what my sister's name was and then signed a copy for her. What a great guy. I told him that I know that he didn't write it for this reason but it's a great way to meet women. He smiled and agreed. It's definitely better than the mindless and cheesy "what's your sign" approach. That was anciet history when I was single and fire was new technology.

Of course, during the show he proceeded to wow the host and the audience. I can't say enough about the author and the book. It is a groundbreaking topic and study.

If you want to understand people including your family, BUY THE BOOK or do what I do and get the audio version. Instead of staring into someone's armpit on the subway this is a great alternative in time management. About 20 years later, I decided to reread or listen to it again.

My husband's older sister (and mother of 3) recommended this book to me. As an only child, and also being child-free, I didn't see how this book would be interesting or useful... whoops!

It was fascinating. I couldn't put it down. It told me more about myself (and why I struggle with some things) than any hour or 50 hours in therapy ever could. Truly changed my life and helped me understand myself, my husband, my marriage, and my relationships with others. This book truly changed my life.

HOWEVER I could really do without the author's constant, and non-stop bragging about himself. A little insight into his life, is nice, but he just went on and on about how marvelous he is and how many wonderful things he's done, and even a little side bragging like slipping into conversation he has multiple homes, or a boat, or has been on the Today Show. Who cares! Is that a baby of the family trait or what?

As a young Mom I read his first book in the 80's. Some of it stuck and really helped and some of it I am sure I forgot to be careful of. Now as a parent of 4 adult children and seeing how this all plays out is even more fascinating! His updates are great because at the original publication time he only had 2 children-now with 5 he has a lot more to say and even more insight. Best part: at the end of each chapter are tips for parenting that specific birth order child.

Great gift for someone just starting their family or even someone in the middle of the throws of child-rearing. It really would work best if they have the information before the patterns are set though!

Absolute garbage.If you're looking for a book on psychology as regards the family,this is not it.He might as well have written his autobiography.If this is what masquerades as psychology in the US,no wonder the countries in a mess.Way too Americanised,way too much personal history going on.It is incredibly generalised.You won't learn anything from this book at all,other than what you could think yourself with a few moments reflection.Seriously shallow.Read some proper books,not some popular dumbed down nonsense.
