When I received them I was a bit disappointed they are just shrink wrapped together in the backpack, no box or real packaging that says what they do or how they work.. Nothing that says there is anything extra in the backpack, or a box you can wrap separately for the guns.
You do get the manual which is the same one that would have been in the box. (These guns can come in boxes from other places)
On to the actual guns: Build quality looks ok, they seem cheap but most toys do. Buttons are alright except the on/off switch seems pretty cheap. He received the hasbro (non phone) laser guns at the same time, and they were built better and for less money.
How did he like them and how do they play? pretty great.
He also received the 4 hasbro guns, these were just as good if not better in actual use.
The hasbro ones with the receiver on top had trouble getting shot from lower angles. So my little nephew had a hard time hitting me even though he was aiming right at my gun just because he was short. Also the hasbro guns had more false hits, the IR was bouncing off lots of interior surfaces and would register hits while completely behind cover.
On these guns you do need to have them aimed together somewhat to be shot, but what it lacks in being able to respond 360 degree like the hasbro it makes up for by being able to trigger from low angles and also almost no false hits from IR bounce.
Fun wise, the hasbros had a better gun feel, heavy, hammer action when you shoot is cool. These have better fantasy, cool sounds and the kid loved having the different gun types and would play with them alone just for the sound effects. Also ease of knowing whats going on. Hasbro guns had 3 team settings, solo/team1/team2. solo couldn't shoot team1 or team2. And the only way to know what setting someone had was to look at their gun, and mistakes were made often. On these guns it has 4 team settings and since your gun changes color no mistakes are made, only complaint is that it always resets to blue when you turn it on. Also the life bars were about perfect for how long a game should last.
All in all i would say they are about on par with the hasbros, what these lack in build quality they make up for in fun/fantasy. They should probably be in the 40-60 price range like the hasbro guns though.
If they happen to break ill update my review.
P.S. Anyone know where i can find the bug that responds to getting shot by these guns in the U.S? Seems like that would be fun to play with when you have nobody else to shoot.
As far as the backpack quality is concerned, my twins love the Star Wars storm trooper graphics. Although the backpack is not heavy duty, it does an adequate job carrying the laser tag guns from one place to another.
