Gavin, the Duke's heir, arrives from America, and is at something of a loss as to how to get along in polite society. Retired to a cottage, barely scraping by, Emily has sworn she'll never marry, having lost her fiance in a duel (over another woman) on the day after their engagement. The Earl of Maxwell, husband to Emily's sister, Isabel, spent his wedding night involved as second to the ill-fated fiance. So, Isabel blames her husband for Emily's loss and pain, and is not very happy over the fact that she spent her wedding night alone. In fact, she's so mad, she has spent every night alone since, avoiding being in the same house with her husband...who is invited to the party. Rounding out the trio is Lucien, heir to his father's title as an Earl, who prefers life in London to learning about the estates he will one day inherit and has no plans to marry any time soon. Enter Miss Chloe, a nineteen year old neighbor of the Duke, who is being wooed by the trio's father, the Earl, much to the horror of his children. Confusing? Actually, the plot isn't at all. But, there are quite a number of characters and plot lines, which makes it all the more fun.
Having so many plots going on also creates something of a problem since the author is limited in how much time and detail she can give to each. Scenes were sometimes glossed over that could have really shone had there been more space.Read more ›
All meet together at their great-uncle's in hopes of bettering their lives. Also at the castle is the Duke's American heir. Naturally, Emily takes one look at him and takes an instant dislike to him. However, since she is determined not to marry but is interested in taking a lover, she thinks he would work quite well in that role. He isn't opposed but his sense of honor won't let him completely compromise her. Along the way they fall in love.
Isabel is surprised to find that her estranged husband has also been invited to the house party. He is willing to compromise with her and offer her an adequate income ... if she will supply him with an heir. As he seduces his wife, she begins to fall in love with him. But her mistaken perceptions about his possible mistresses keep her from trusting him.
All three are surprised to find that their father is on the verge of offering for the nineteen-year-old daughter of a neighbor.Read more ›
There were no surprises in this story. Everyone ends up with exactly who you think they will. There was also no real tension. I didn't find myself caring as intensely as I might have. I kept wanting more from each couple. The married but estranged couple were my favorites and there simply wasn't enough story there to sustain their difficulties.
I might read another by this author if it were about one main couple with perhaps a secondary romance that wasn't trying to take over. Having three couples to keep up with was just tiring overall. I ended the story not really knowing who the main couple was but glad to see all six of them settled.
The writing was well done. Michaels kept the story moving along nicely. The sex component is not glossed over but neither is it made to be the be-all/end-all of the tale. If you enjoy a story that plays out within a few short days, you will enjoy this. I guess you might liken it to the Sondheim musical, A Little Night Music, although there is no actress to sing "Send In The Clowns."
"The Birthday Scandal" contained all of those things I loved. A heroine denying she will ever find the right man to love and marry yet all the time she is telling the world this the one persons she tells the most she falls in love with against her better judgement. What better way to avoid the tension then to dismiss any true feelings between them and focus on setting him up with someone better suited for him. And Definite Reasons why the hero made himself so accommodating all the while not noticing he too is falling in love. It's delicious.
The author is also able to build several other meaningful characters in this plot each one struggling to love- fall in love - stay in love.
