From legendary creator Mr. Yasuhiro Wada comes Birthdays the Beginning, a new sandbox game in which players create cube-shaped worlds that give rise to diverse and unique life forms. With careful experimentation, players can shape the geography and alter the temperature of each world to create the conditions for life and witness the birth of an entire ecosystem.

That said, once you take the game for what it is, rather than what you expected it to be, it's rather engaging and fun. The interface is easy to use (particularly after the first patch update) so it's fun rather than frustrating to go around raising and lowering land to get just the right environment for that next land or sea creature to appear; compare this to games like 7 Days To Die where the game itself is complex and ambitious but the interface is a complete mess and frustrating to learn. The species themselves are cute and well-animated, and the overall graphics are just right for a gentle sim like this.
The short campaign is basically an extended tutorial, but again it is fun. There are a good number of challenge stages with pre-built worlds and conditions to try to achieve. And of course there is the free play mode, which after the first patch is available much earlier in the game.
Overall, well worth it for light fun if you can get this at a good price.
