In the beginning something goes terribly wrong (no spoilers here) and Caislyn sets out determined to find her missing parents. The family lawyer and others believe them dead, but Casilyn refuses to believe it. In her quest to find them she joins forces with Jax, a very strong individual who is just beginning to learn what she is fully capable of.
The two main characters in this story come across as being very relatable to the reader. As I read along, I found myself nodding my head as the character's mannerisms and quirks felt real. I know someone like that...
I also felt as though I was fighting and struggling right alongside the two main characters. Oh, and there's that troublesome, meddlesome vampire who... well I don't want to give anything away.
All in all, I found this book to be an entertaining read which left me wanting more.
In my mind, I was living the story with the two main characters -Caislyn and Jaxon-. I laughed with them through their discoveries, and my heart went out to them at their human like need to search for answers to what had happened to the both of them that brought them to the point in the book. By the end, I found my self wishing that the second book in this trilogy was already out so that I keep on reading. I want more! More answers, more story, more Witches!
With so many books out here today focusing on the Vampire world, I was pleasantly surprised to see how the author -Christine Butler- incorporated `Vamps' in such a way that they played more of a background role throughout. I, personally have never fallen in love with a Witch story like I did this one, and it has really opened my mind to wanting to check out more book like this.
I can only imagine what Caislyn and Jaxon have waiting for them in book 2 of the Awakening trilogy, and I'm anxiously waiting for its release in September 2011!
That being said, I did really enjoy the characters and the story. It moved at a good pace, the story was interesting and exciting, and it was overall a good read.
I would NOT pay for these books again; wait until they are free, or the author does some serious editing.
It was really frustrating to read through something so rough, especially since I paid for it. The story would be so much better if you didn't have to work so hard to read it.
SPOILERS... general theme, no specific details revealed
A young witch (Caislyn) has just had her both parents (also magical inclined) disappear under somewhat unusual and disturbing circumstances. In her ongoing attempts to learn of their whereabouts she makes some intriguing discoveries and a few new friends and enemies along the way.
1.) a superb beginning... tense, exciting and full of promise for a great fantasy read.
2.) cover art... an attractive, appealing cover. Caught my eye and esthetically seem to nicely portray the story within.
3.) action scenes were well written with a nice sense of timing, pace and description.
1.) dialogue... often came off with a feeling of being force and contrived.
Many of the conversations between Cais and Jax had a silly school girl quality, bordering on the inane. This one major and recurring flaw gave the entire work a Young Adult feel.
A story that started off very well and appeared to have great potential. However, conversations between characters left me feeling that this was a book intended for a tween female fantasy audience.
I gave up on this book about 1/2 way through.
