“Beautifully written, spectacularly descriptive... Character development was fantastic... I felt for them, I understood them, I wanted what they wanted... I think that the rest of this series will be a massive hit among readers.”
Book Addict Rambles
“An expansive and exciting work of fantasy that holds the reader’s interest over well-written terrain.”
“I was absolutely delighted with this book from start to finish... If you are looking for a magical read, look no further... full of rich history, incredible world-building, and a complex plot... I wish that I could forget its contents and read it over and over again.”
“A thought-provoking read with a beautifully created culture that readers will appreciate.”
“An extremely solid start to a very promising new fantasy series... Richly detailed, thought-provoking, and highly intriguing... This is not just a simple tale of two young people coming of age. It is a story about faith and beliefs. About corrupted politics and the inciting of a rebellion. About history and finding out where you fit into that which is being made around you. About discovering the meaning of truth and extracting it from the harshness of deceit. These characters are having their eyes opened to the society they are living in, one where the foundation is deception and the currency is lies.”
The Quirky Book Nerd
“A fascinating world of varying beliefs”
About the Author
Kyle McNeal grew up on the side of a mountain in Western North Carolina, far enough from neighbors that imagination was often his primary companionship. He discovered a magic there―along the winding logging trail, beside the backyard stream, and within the hidden hemlock fort―that instilled a dream to one day share that magic with the world. Thus, while meeting with recruiters during his graduation year from Georgia Tech, he answered the “five-year plan” question with his intention to write fantasy. But first, five years turned into twenty. He worked in management consulting and private equity before tackling the challenge to start and run an operation in China. Seasoned by his many travels and experiences, and eager to write full-time, he resigned his management role abroad and returned to the U.S. From his home in Fort Mill, South Carolina, he strives to merge the nuances of the real world with the magic of imagination, to weave stories that both entertain and provoke reflection.

The world-building McNeal undertakes is epic and ambitious. What initially seems like a two-dimensional quest turns into a much more nuanced cross-generational adventure with interesting gods and monsters to love and hate. As the world unfolds, it's history and rules are revealed, and I really enjoyed the amount of thought that clearly went into it all.
All in all, I give Birthrights a solid 4 stars, and I'm really looking forward to following Whym and Quint and all the others in the forthcoming sequel(s).
Full disclosure, I was given an early copy of Birthrights, but have not been compensated in any way for this review.
16 year old Whym is about to find out what house he goes to at Hogwarts oops! I mean he is about to find out how he will spend the rest of his life, this happens at the Choosing Ceremony if you are from the lovely RatsNest neighborhood of Riverbend. His destiny lies with a career as a 'seeker' aka a bounty hunter, under the tutelage of Stern Sandoval and senior apprentice, Kutan, They hunt their first target in the Wildes of the Lost Land.
Quint is the son of the Voice of the Oracle is however he is currently living with the Dragonborn of Welloch tribe and being instructed in their ways by Nikla,
Frankly, I got exhausted in all the world building and I read Dune without an issue. And yet I know I will need to pick up book two to find out what happens next to Quint and Whym.
Age appropriate for anyone age 16 and up. 'Broken Oaths' the next book in the series is due June 2018.
I have a lot to write about on this novel. I loved every moment, every page of this story: I was taken into a different world, immersing myself in its history, its complexity, its characters and social life. But allow me to start from the top.
The style of writing is mesmerizing and I truly admire how the author managed to described and give depth to the world of the Lost Lands and its characters without leaving the reader bored or tired of the descriptions. Furthermore, the organized and methodical structure of the novel leaves no space for loose ends, which is the best satisfaction a reader like me could have. It starts with the lightness in the first chapters, thoroughly building up, providing background stories, introducing characters that sooner or later will have an impact in the story. I have this image that the words are like puzzle pieces that come together to create something bigger and beautiful. I got completely absorbed by the words; it was difficult to put the book down.
The characters are just as complex as the reality they live in. I have to be honest and confess that I did have to make a list with the names of the characters and who they were since I did end up forgetting who they were at some point, but that didn’t influence my view of the novel at all. It is an extensive list of characters however and all of them have a distinctive way personality, and they are all very aware of the issues of their society. They have depth and are well-developed; it was easy to connect with them. The way the novel is written gives the reader the opportunity to get to know the characters as individuals and then as a group. I really felt their connection with each other, not only based on their conversations but also their actions.
Overall: beautiful scenarios, unique characters and a thrilling story-line make this a very promising fantasy series! I vividly recommend this novel to all the fans of fantasy that want to live a unique adventure in this wonderful world!
