a really good book if you don't understand blockchain and an even better book you know ZERO about crypto. Do your boomer parents a favor and buy this for them for the holidays.

The easiest to read, yet most in depth book about bitcoin! The cartoons really make the various technologies used in bitcoin, easy to understand concepts. I highly recommend for any beginner who wants to become an intermediate bitcoin user or promoter.

A really great introduction to cryptocurrencies, the blockchain, and bitcoin.

Cons First: Ok, there were a couple things I wasn't fond of in this book. There were lots of comic strip explanations, examples and metaphors. I felt some of the examples/metaphors were a little questionable but all in all the book really is great and a beneficial contribution to the space.

Pros Next:

The book covers:

Wallets and Nodes are covered with light talk about Authoritative Nodes and SPV Nodes. Nodes are explained in a way that is sufficient for the Newbie or lesser informed Bitcoiner.

Blockchain is explained decently but still simply enough that everyone gets it.

Symmetric and asymmetric key encryption is demonstrated in a very simple way using easy to follow examples, step-by-step, walking you through the process and showing you how it relates to Bitcoin Signatures.

Elliptic Curve Cryptography and where it lies within Bitcoin Address creation is covered in a layman's way so that anyone can get it.

They go over Bitcoin Mining with pretty good detail and discourage mining for profit. The two authors describe details about hash rates and difficulty levels simply so that the average person can understand, but developers will benefit as well.

Price volatility is also slightly covered with references to valuation increases and decreases over time. It's actually presented as a “Caveat emptor” but leaves you feeling very optimistic about the future of Bitcoin.

Code writing is also covered. Node.js, Bitcoin Core Client deployment, Java, JSON-RPC are all very thinly covered but in a way a novice developer can get started and continue with research online. Great door opener for developers who haven't yet investigated Full Bitcoin Nodes and interacting with such.

I am sure there was more covered in the book than I have listed here. I read it a while ago and haven't had the time to post my review until now. All in all I would tell everyone to add this book to their Bitcoin Collection from novices to experts.

EDIT: Make sure when you are doing the Transaction examples in the book (code writing) you are using the Bitcoin Testnet instead of the Bitcoin Network. This will ensure you don't lose real bitcoins!! This is not covered in the book but should have been.

Skeptical? Join the club...

This book is the best source for solid, step-by-step Bitcoin information I have found. You would think that maybe the Internet would provide everything you need to understand the Bitcoin transactional-social development but I have not found that to be true. Isn't this the sort of subject where any (printed) book is way too late?

The authors answered my first question right up front: "To keep this book relevant for the future, we did our best to focus on those aspects of Bitcoin that will remain important forever, and we tried to cover them in a way that is fun." They met their goal spot on and the fact that one of the authors shared his skill as a cartoonist did not hurt at all. There are a lot of creative and memorable narrative techniques in this book. Well done!

I got this book because I am frustrated that my savings are earning approximately 0% interest because of the policies of my government--while inflation in the basic necessities of everyday life is worrisome. Lots of people are in the same situation.

What are the alternatives available to us to at least protect what we have?

This book clarified for me the practicality of the Bitcoin path. For now, I intend to enthusiastically avoid the Bitcoin world of exchanges, wallets, addresses, market orders, limit orders and cryptography--and continue looking for that safe haven we all crave.

Dry and repetitive but has decent info

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I figured I'd give this one a go. I purchased this book recently through another source online, but I must say I didn't know I was getting such a deal at the time.

You might think the subject itself could be a little dry or confusing, but I think the authors introduced the topic well in laymen's terms. Or at least they provided relatable stories to help you understand how things worked. All of the chapters except for maybe Chapter 7 (more in depth description of the cryptography behind it) were very accessible. There were entertaining comics as well as jokes and stories spread throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested or curious about bitcoin or any spin-off alternative cryptocurrencies. This is one of the few books this year that I read cover to cover. I'm looking forward to picking up other books by these authors.

I enjoy Conrad Barski's writing immensely. He's also well worth listening to when he's on a podcast. This book is no exception. I'd recommend it to anyone with the least bit of curiosity about Bitcoin regardless of their background.

This is my favourite kind of book, although it isn't what I expected. I purchased expecting a thin, highly readable intro to Bitcoin which I could hand around to my friends to help them understand what this is all about. The first part of the book is sort of like that, even including cartoons to illustrate concepts, but it wades rather too far out to see, culminating in *very* technical detail about the underlying mathematics of Bitcoin, enough to put off a beginner forever.

Luckily this is right up my street, and I enjoyed it immensely. Sadly it means I am still looking for that readable "Bitcoin for the normal person" book, but I did get a brilliant book out of it!

Left me as befuddled as before. Writer assumes you know what he's talking about, but as the 'befuddled', surely the expectation should be that you're not up with all the jargon and tech.
