The Bitcoin Big Bang: How Alternative Currencies Are About to Change the World Tapa dura – Ilustrado, 17 Noviembre 2014
Opciones de compra y productos Add-on
The Bitcoin Big Bang is a guide to navigating the uncharted territory of digital currency. Written by CNBC contributor Brian Kelly, this book goes beyond Bitcoin 101 to explain how this transformative technology is about to change the world. Digital currency is thrown into perspective against the history of payment systems and its own evolution, as readers are invited to explore the ways in which this technology is already changing the way business gets done. Readers gain insight into the mechanisms behind Bitcoin, and an expert perspective on digital currency's effect on the future of money and the economic implications of the Bitcoin revolution.
In the same way that e-mail changed the way we transfer information, the decentralized Bitcoin network is about to revolutionize the business world, the legal profession, and even the role of the government. The Bitcoin Big Bang dives head first into this paradigm shift, allowing readers to:
- Explore the origins of digital currency
- Learn the history and evolution of payment systems
- Discover how the Bitcoin network is facilitating free and instant transfer of value
- Understand the mining of Bitcoin, and how to invest
The digital currency revolution has implications that spread far beyond the finance industry. Anyone who exchanges payment for goods and services is on the cusp of the next big push in societal evolution, and only an understanding of the technology and a clear knowledge of the systems and behaviors at play can fully prepare us for the changes to come. The Bitcoin Big Bang is the go-to guide, helping those who use money use it better.

Nota de la solapa
Bitcoin gained notoriety among the public when it was linked to global black market trading rings, but the technology behind Bitcoin makes it far more interesting than your average alternative currency. The Bitcoin Big Bang approaches Bitcoin from a more complex perspective than has previously been attempted. Brian Kelly, a currency investment specialist with over 20 years of experience, conducted extensive research into the Bitcoin revolution and discovered a potential for widespread social transformation.
An understanding of how Bitcoin is changing the future of finance, and even the nature of the Internet itself, is mandatory for anyone looking to invest in or prepare for new trading platforms. Uniquely, The Bitcoin Big Bang emphasizes the technological underpinning of Bitcoin the "blockchain." Whether Bitcoin is or isn't a legitimate currency is, according to Brian Kelly, next to irrelevant. With its ability to record every Bitcoin transaction and securely transfer value over insecure networks, the blockchain is a game changer. A world without identity theft, an Internet without passwords, a decentralized financial system, self-securing investments all these previously unthinkable advances are possible using a technology that was given away for free by an enigmatic developer.
Those who are interested in investing in Bitcoin through purchasing or "mining" will find enough information to get started in The Bitcoin Big Bang. However, this book goes further than Bitcoin 101. Business readers will appreciate the in-depth look at regulatory issues and the discussions of cryptography, business strategy, human resource management, and the sharing economy. This is the long view. Looking beyond the bubble to the new reality of digital currency trading is a move any smart investor ought to make. Ultimately, The Bitcoin Big Bang answers one of the most pressing questions in finance, business, government, and beyond: "What is Bitcoin and how will it change the world?"

Sobre el autor

Every so often I find myself with the insatiable desire to jump off a cliff and think about the consequences later. Some may call it curiosity, while others think I am just plain crazy. I typically relish the skepticism as I have found that the best opportunities arise when everyone else thinks I am a little nuts. The Bitcoin Big Bang was one of these times...actually, truth be told, this time I was the one who was skeptical. Despite my fear, uncertainty and doubt, I jumped anyway.
When I began writing the Bitcoin Big Bang it was for selfish reasons - I had bought bitcoin near the peak and now was in a losing trade and needed to know everything about this 'investment'. I figured I could turn my research into a book and learn a few things in the process. I did not know that I had stumbled on one of the most fascinating and promising technological advances since the internet. When I first heard of Bitcoin it was through the currency markets and I that is where my journey to Bitcoin Enlightenment began.
A little more about me...

Blockchains, miners, digital wallets, enormous computing power, and thousands of autonomous geeks around the world all play a role in creating a universal set of digital currencies that may replace money, banking, bureaucratic nightmares, and the necessary and understandable lack of trust associated with the financial sectors. First we learn about Bitcoin — the powerful emotion and skepticism surrounding it, the concept of currency, and money itself. Then the mysterious mathematics and their secret creator or creators that make it all possible for free — thanks to the open-source concept and the hard-fought rules of "creative commons" (Kelly correctly does not go into these but the IT folks will immediately see the connection).
All through the book we see that he recognizes that the inherent problem with digital currencies is one of universal acceptance by the average person. This caution exists because the technology, the math, the secrecy of the inventor, and the emotional attachment to paper money, etc. makes any rational person very skeptical. So Mr. Kelly, with refreshing humor, walks us through his own doubts and foibles on the path to his own acceptance and bursting enthusiasm.
Personally, I cannot quite get my emotional and cognitive arms around the concept of digital currencies yet. However, thanks to this book, I am aware, excited, and fully understand the revolutionary potential.
Probably the best compliment that a reviewer can give to a book that he or she likes is to find only marginally related things to complain about. So here it goes. If Kelly would just jump on the "big money out of politics" band wagon, he just might find the right tool to regulate digital currencies in a way that works — indeed in a way that would make Kelly's dream possible. That is, toward the end of the book, he makes a big point about his fears of getting the regulatory part wrong — and getting it wrong is virtually guaranteed if elected officials must keep secretly shifting their positions toward the lobby money, thus guaranteeing that there will be no politician in a position to guard against "regulatory capture", which is a legitimate concern originating out of the Chicago School of Economics. This area is something that I wish the book would have at least acknowledged, especially considering its frequent references to the economics of Friedrich Hayek, the Chicago School's hero.
The only other negative about the book, and it is minor, is that Mr. Kelly, like most finance folks, seems to focus too much on the role of the Federal Reserve (e.g., I for one, am on Warren Buffet's side with his gratitude that our government can indeed print money!). Without question, monetary policy is the weaker of the two economic pillars but Kelly and the rest of us are thankful that the Fed. did what it did to mitigate the dual catastrophes of the banking meltdown and the too-late and too-much of a supply side stimulus on the fiscal side. John Maynard Keynes had it right all along but we only see mention of Friedrich Hayek in the book, who Keynes would have persuaded except for his untimely death.
I am glad that I bought the book and I await for the stars to be formed after this digital "big bang". Thank you Mr. Kelly.

Brian serves as a level-headed and knowledgeable field guide to an exotic new world polarized by extreme opinions at both ends of the spectrum -- from head-in-the-sand skepticism to wild-eyed hype.
I'll admit... I'm enamored with the possibilities for Bitcoin and its altcoin cousins. The more I learn about blockchain technology the more I can envision it impacting, if not significantly transforming, diverse swaths of our world, including real estate, banking, insurance, venture capital, gambling, supply chains, internet of things, identity verification, and voting.
After finishing Bitcoin Big Bang, I was reminded of Amara's law, which says, "We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run." That could well apply to the blockchain. In the long run, "check it on the blockchain" could be as common an expression as "google it."
Whether you are considering investing in crypto or just want to stay current with the latest developments in finance and technology, Bitcoin Big Bang is the definitive guide to understanding the origins and potential of this emerging disruptive technology.
CNBC's Fast Money contributor Brian Kelly does a great job of explaining this relatively complicated subject to anyone who is unfamiliar with the subject and even describes his efforts to create his own alternative coin, or "alt coin," to bitcoin. Despite the complaints of some other reviewers, the book is not riddled with typos; I only noticed a couple.
The author continues to pound the Bitcoin drum, as well he should, making the case on last night's "Fast Money" episode of how bitcoin is already disrupting companies such as Western Union. Read this book to find out why and how many other industries will be affected by The Big Bang.

This book brings the ideas in that book into clear focus. Is a bitcoin worth anything? Is its value sustained? Is its eventual value predictable? Could a network of digital coiners eventually get a currency more trusted than those backed by governments? This book guides you through the intricacies of answering such questions extremely well.
Bitcoin actually has put a step in its processes so that it is not just electronic cash. It's certified money- you know every hand and transaction it's been through through its existence...if existence in cyberspace can be said to be real. But is the value of a Dollar or a Pound real? Even if you squeeze the Queen's eye ever so hard that it hurts? What are we clinging onto in this age that new things are coming to sweep away?
This book is a great assessment of Bitcoin and other digital currencies and their strengths and weaknesses. in the eighteenth century in Halifax we had the Cragg Vale Coiners The Coiners Of Cragg Vale who were clearly involved in illegal forgery as they clipped the edges off regular coins and minted them down into their own. Bitcoin seems to be entirely legal- it's just a means of exchange- and the trust is built in as you know where the bitcoin has come from and where it's going to.
The technology of Bitcoin is elegantly simple and it cuts out a step in financial transaction- it restores trust (via traceability and accountability) between individuals and therefore saves the need for many bank transactions, and the percentage to the banks of each interaction (a point of financial friction, that banks earn interest on for oiling the wheels) It's technology with revolutionary potential, that we have only just begun to get our heads around.
The author has got his head around this a bit ahead of the rest of us. He's a sure footed guide and anticipating a greater future. He's written a well informed, positive and optimistic guide to the potential of this technology.
From my medical viewpoint I wonder if bitcoin's technology could be adapted for electronic medical records and their secure storage, use and sharing over web based servers, allowing proper patient care, whatever venue a patient was in.
There's a huge potential here, unfurling before our eyes.
It's also on the short side, and as with any non-fiction book on a modern topic, it is apt to go out of date.

The book concludes on a rousing note: 'The Bitcoin Big Bang is a social and economic revolution that will propel the next surge of human development'. Excuse me if I retain some scepticism about that claim.
