New and Improved in BitDefender 2010
Many of today's stealth viruses are designed to avoid antivirus detection by initially laying dormant only to attack your PC when it is most vulnerable. BitDefender 2010 features a cutting-edge security system, Active Virus Control, which constantly monitors all of the processes on your PC, 24/7, blocking any malicious behavior before it can cause any damage.
The abundance of new viruses calls for faster ways to detect them. BitDefender's Optimized Scanning avoids the scanning of files that are known to be safe. The result? BitDefender 2010 scans your PC in half the time needed by previous versions, while using less resources.
Easier to Use
Whether you're a security expert or a novice, with the new BitDefenderUser Profiles you can easily manage your PC's security. The product interface adapts to the chosen profile and provides quick access to the main security functionalities you are most likely to need (Parental Controls for parents, or Gamer Mode for gamers). BitDefender 2010 also features three dashboard views--Novice, Intermediate, and Expert--to better accommodate users with different levels of PC knowledge.
Improved Parental Control
The Parental Control module features a newly added reporting system allowing parents to view what websites their children visit. Moreover, parents can set specific time intervals in which their children are allowed to access the Internet or use certain applications.
Improved Intrusion Detection
BitDefender detects and blocks attempts to change critical system files or registry entries on your PC and warns you about attacks performed by code injection (DLL injection).
Improved In-Product Technical Support
You can get answers to the most common product-related questions or contact technical support directly from the product using its easy-to-use self-service module.

Pros...Price & UI
Cons...No Support, Overall Computer Speed cut in half, Popular programs not allowed to access internet and manually updating firewall doesn't help, Computer freezes or drastically slows during updates (about 20 - 40 times a day), Many updates are large files that take a long time to install. BitDefender shuts down during certain updates.
With yearly antivirus subscriptions getting so expensive, I set out to find a good antivirus / firewall that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I have several years experience installing and maintaining corporate systems and have had enough experience with Norton and Mcafee to know that I don't want them on my personal computer. I remember reading an article from a few years before where they tested many of the antivirus products on the market to see if they would actually detect many different viruses, and the two winners were Kaspersky and BitDefender. I bought Kaspersky for 2009, and all in all it was a good product, but it was also the most expensive. When my subscription expired, I decided to try BitDefender because they were cheaper. I am not very happy with my purchase but I will try to remain objective.
Pros: Price, UI. The only positive things I can say are that it is usually cheaper than many other antivirus programs and there are a few areas in the user interface that I like better than others. Outside of that, everything else is negative.
Cons: Firewall locks down several popular programs (and adding them manually does no good), No Support, Overall Computer Speed cut in half, Computer freezes during updates, BitDefender turns off antivirus and firewall during certain updates leaving you unprotected several times a day. Scans take twice as long as previous Anti-Virus.
Several programs I have on my computer are no longer allowed to access the internet. Some of them are very popular (has anyone ever heard of Microsoft Office?). For nine months I have tried to contact BitDefender support and can't even get a confirmation email back saying they have received my email, much less any actual help. Trolling through the support forums, I see I am not alone. Many others are complaining they have sent multiple emails, online chat and phone messages and have never received a response. If you are thinking of buying this product, read the reviews and understand there is NO SUPPORT. BitDefender password protects its support forums so that only subscribers can see what is going on and prospective customers are kept in the dark. Namely, that the same problems are happening year after year and are not being resolved and very few support posts ever get fixed.
To do a full scan takes over 3 hours, for what other anti-virus products did in less than an hour.
The overhead of this product is unreal. I keep a clean computer and run only programs that I need. My computer speed has been cut in half since installing BitDefender. I had to turn off BitDefender automatic updates because my computer would just freeze. Now I get hit with dozens of manual update messages and have to choose when to install them, because it means I will be without a computer for the next 5 to 10 minutes. Before installing BitDefender, when I clicked on Firefox, it would take about 15 seconds before Firefox was up and running with about 10 add-ons. After installing BitDefender it immediately went to over 40 seconds and after an update last month it has been averaging over 1 min 15 seconds and I have removed 7 add-ons. The funniest thing about the updates is that some of them actually shut off BitDefender. Your icon in the system tray will turn to black and you will get a message that BitDefender is no longer functioning and if things don't return to normal, reboot your computer and contact BitDefender support. Are they the only anti-virus company that hasn't figured out how to update their product without shutting it off and leaving their customers vulnerable to attack? Even though I have a two year subscription and have only used 9 months, I am going to buy another antivirus / firewall. I need my computer back.
Isn't the definition of a virus - a malicious program that can lock or freeze your computer, can prevent applications from running properly or accessing the internet, can drastically slow down your computer...wait that's what BitDefender does!
I noticed a couple of unpolished elements when installing. There were a lot of DOS command prompt windows opening in the background on the screen very briefly. I didn't have to interact with any of them and they went away almost immediately so there's no harm to it. It's just a little unpolished.
I should also mention that the update for it is big. It will ask to download the updated installer, then after a few minutes when that's downloaded and run the updates for the program are currently over 75 MB. I think that's probably the case with many anti-virus programs, but just be aware if you're on dial-up you'll be downloading for quite some time.
I uninstalled that old 2008 version from a laptop and a desktop. The desktop went fine, but the laptop failed to uninstall. I tried to get the uninstall program off Bitdefender's website, but the link they pointed to was dead. Eventually, I found the CD and reinstalled, which failed, but the CD had the uninstaller which worked. I only mention this because it's a little worrisome that if the last program had those issues that this version might when I eventually uninstall it.
I like this version of the program. It has several different modes ranging from Novice (hides settings) to expert (showing all of it) and is very easy to change between them. My absolute favorite part though, is the "you're not fully protected" system. In past programs I've used, if you disable some feature you constantly get the little alert icon that you're "at risk". Bitdefender 2010 lets you choose which of those things it monitors for. So I didn't want the anti-spam because I only use web mail, so I told it not to bother me that I'd deleted it. It may be a small thing, but to me it's a huge annoyance saver.
So far, I cannot tell if the scanner is faster or not. It scans at only about a quarter of the number of files per second as the old program, but it supposedly has an intelligent monitoring system which lets it avoid rescanning files that haven't changed and thus couldn't have picked up an infection. So while it wasn't that fast on the first scan, in theory it'll only get faster moving forward. It intentionally skipped thousands of files.
Default is a daily scan, which in my opinion is complete overkill. Unless you have a kid in your house, if the resident protection is running all the time you can get by with once or twice a week. Thankfully, the scheduling is very easy and you can even set the scans to take low priority, which is a nice touch.
In terms of detection, BitDefender isn't the highest rated scanner, but it's far from the lowest. It's an excellent budget anti-virus package and more than adequate for most people's needs. Considering how reasonable the pricing is, I'd happily recommend. However, since I've only used it a week or so, if it does do anything really weird I'll update my review to mention it.
Finally had to use my printer and guess what? BitDefender has killed it. I can't use my network printer so I'm dropping this review a couple stars. I killed its firewall and turned the Windows one on again. Guess what? I can print again. I wasted 2 hours dealing trying to fix it before I gave up. Unacceptable behavior in a firwall.
