If the focus does not return to building solid, efficient, and easy-to-use security software then I will probably start another search.
Installation from CD was a snap on the two machines. Based on other comments I found, I set both machines to autopilot mode. The product immediately found what it deemed critical Windows updates, even for Microsoft Office, that Windows Update had failed to detect.
My first big complaint is with the firewall. It stops anything it doesn't like and there is no way to actually turn it off. While I flip the switch that says "off" it continues to disrupt activities that are safe, most notably reading and writing from my share drive and using Windows Remote Assistance to support others. Reading and writing to the share drive has gone from seconds (prior product) to minutes with BitDefender. The Windows Remote Assistance just flat does not work. Researching the problem, I found many others with the same issue. Opening a trouble ticket has yielded no response.
Next up on the annoyance list is the SPAM filter. There is no way to stop it from arbitrarily placing email in the SPAM folder, it created. No notice is given when mail is directed there. Even mail on my trusted list goes to the SPAM folder. Thus far, 100% of the mail it sends to SPAM I do not consider SPAM. Microsoft Outlook does a better job of actually picking off the junk mail.
Another extremely bothersome item is the updating. On a daily occurrence it goes through its update cycle and updates itself, with what is unclear, but one could expect it to be virus definitions. Most of these updates generate a "warning message" that the machine must be rebooted to apply the changes. It is quite worrisome that it requires so many major changes.
Safepay is a fiasco - when going to any banking site, BitDefender takes over. It prompts for using their safe interface rather than using the browser. When I used this for one banking site, it got me locked out of the site so I had to turn it off.
Support is non-existent. Information on their "Help" site is not very helpful. When I contacted support for assistance, I never heard back.
On the [possibly] good news side, it is very aggressive at identifying Windows updates that should be applied, even if you set Windows updates to automatic on your base system.
I was going to give it two stars only because many of the "expert" sites have rated the product to be the best and finding and preventing problems. I even waited several months to review to make sure I gave the product a full tryout and wait for the support team to respond, which has never happened.
This product is perfect for the person who does the basics with their machine and doesn't want to worry about keeping the virus definitions up to date. Perhaps the base A/V product is good and not overbearing but I strongly recommend against the more advanced product sets. I'm using the cost of this product as a "lesson learned" and now searching for a replacement.
Additionally, Bitdefender IS has a minimum of four software updates PER DAY. Why they need to do that much updating is beyond me. Every time the IS updates, it renders each of my computers completely inoperable for the duration of the update.
I have had little issue with what the program is designed to do -- keep my computers safe. However, if you are in the market for a new virus protection software, look elsewhere because Bitdefender bogs down PCs way too often to make it worth the affordability and the 2-yr subscription. I'm honestly considering writing off the remaining 22 months of my subscription as a loss and switching back to McAfee just to avoid the frustration.
Update Nov 2014
Having used this for several months now, I'd say this one offers better level of virus/ malware detection than many known softwares. Hence I am changing the rating from 2 to 3. However, the features of this tool are not very user friendly and the issue with false positives remain. Adding a security exclusion is not very intuitive and would be almost undoable for most customers. This one was flagging a file in Star Wars the Old Republic as virus. Tech support responded after a 2 days via email which didn't really resolve my problem. By this time I had fixed the problem myself after I spent several hours on Google.
