The bulk of the story is spent in setting up the characters and relationship of Donna and Connor, her vampire boyfriend and in setting the stage for the main conflict (vampire politics) that will be explored in subsequent novels in the series. Not much time is spent in world building which I found to be the greatest weakness of the story. The story is set in Dallas but not much is done to create the setting, mood or secondary characters that make for a rich reading experience. That is, in my opinion, one of the things Ms. Harris does so well.
Bottom line: this was light, quick reading that taps in to many of the typical vampire/human romance tropes. The flow is pretty good and the writing is fair. I didn’t find it objectionable but neither did I find it compelling.
*It's gonna get slightly spoilery from here on out (UNLESS YOU'VE READ TWILIGHT!).*
Our heroine is down in the dumps at the beginning of our journey (Bella- had to move away from her mom; Donna- lost her job & had to move apartments). Then one mysterious night, Bella (OOPS, I meant Donna) is saved from being gang raped in a dark alley by the tall dark mysterious stranger she met previously in the book. They go to dinner & play 120 questions of "what it's like to be a vampire", but Edward (Dang it! I meant Conner!) can't really tell her about his vampire buddies, but for whatever reason he automatically LOVES HER & wants her to "feel safe with him".
Bella/Donna is absolutely turned on/super horny (I did it again! I meant "infatuated") by Edward/Conner & cant stay away from him. She believes she's crazy for even thinking he's a vampire, despite having seen him in action (AKA: superhuman strength, fangs, blah blah blah). Finally she accepts it as truth & knows she should be afraid of him, but strangely feels comfortable with him. The list goes on & on even though it's the first quarter of the book, but I'm sure you get it...
I'm so tired of these Twilight spin offs. At least pretend you're not ripping off another highly successful series. And truly, FIVE books? You need 5 to tell this story?? Stephenie Meyer did it in 4 *shoulder shrug*.
In case it wasn't obvious, it's a NO from me. Look elsewhere if you're interested in paranormal romance, there is ALOT better out there. In defense of the author, I read her new series "Blood & Bone" first and give it a solid 3.5 stars, but I doubt I'll be continuing that series either. This just wasn't for me.
- Connor is pretty darn sexy
- The sex scenes are well done (see above)
- Overall the author's writing style is good
The not so great:
- The romance between Donna and Conner goes from hot and fun to fairly mushy about 3/4 through the book. They go from having normal, and sometimes too snarky on Donna's part, conversations to over the top "I can't live without you" or "My world would end if anything ever happened to you" kind of dialogue.
- Donna can be a little TOO snarky. Most of the time, she is funny, but she was also pretty abrasive at times.
- Did not provide a clear picture on several "happenings" in the story, especially at the end. Not a lot of details, though there is a lot of action.
Again, I enjoyed it overall but I am going to read the next book to see if this is an author I will continue to follow. (as a reference, a few of my favorite authors are Patricia Briggs, Kelley Armstrong, & Shannon Mayer).

Strange rushed ending too
Update..... Book 2 is just as good been reading it continously hadn't realised that so many hours has passed since breakfast, it's brilliant now to continue on haven't had dinner yet oh well, it's too good to stop. Lol!!
And it wasnt half bad! Was actually pretty good!
Donna, was a very independant 'heroine' in the story and that streak never left, which was great to see as some do lose it through a book.
The chemistry between Donna and Conner is written extremely well - you can feel it through the authors words....and the sex scenes arent overly graphic like some can be...alot is left to the imagination which is a refreshing change!
Already lined up book 2.....!
