The author writes this book from the heroine POV so we do not get insight from the hero POV. It would of been a better book if it was written by a third party POV. We would of known what Conner was thinking and feeling towards Donna. When did he first see her? At the bar? Why was he at the bar? What was his personal history? How did he rescue her at the end? How did he kill Parker? Why didn't he ask her what happended to her when she first woke up? Did Parker touch her? Rape her? What happenend during her time with the enemy? Did these two not communicate at all? Through the whole book they rarely asked any personal questions to each other. Was the history of vampires? Was Connor born or turned a vampire? She assumed that Conner would turn her but they never talked about it and what the procedure was. Wouldn't you ask that if your boyfriend wanted to turn you into a vampire?!!This was touched on after the deed was done.
Not to mention Ivie. Your best freind got kidnap with you and you don't ask her what they did to her? How she is? No details at all!
I need more details to enjoy it IMO. The series has potential if the author will add in the details needed and more communication between her h/h.
"I didn't compel you to kiss me."
"Then why did I just kiss you? I would never do that without being coerced."
"Coerced?" he asked as though he couldn't believe I knew what the word meant...Condescending, bloodsucking b-*tard.
"I believe it's called chemistry not coercion."
"Chemistry?... No, no, no. There's no chemistry here."
"That's too bad, Donna, because I have to disagree."
Donna = Snarky, sassy, sarcastic human who definitely doesn't believe in vampire's.
Conner = Persistent, determined, sexy as hell vampire who is completely fascinated with a certain human.
Conner catches Donna's eyes while she's working but he disappears just as quickly but that's not the last she see's of him because lucky for her he comes back later that night to save her from being attacked. Conner reveals he's a vampire to Donna not long after and Donna puts it down to more of her bad luck, she point blank refuses to believe him. A lot of the time I'm impatient for the couple to hurry up and get together already but actually Donna's determination to refuse what's in front of her, what Conner is telling her and her pure defiance with everything Conner were actually one of my favourite things about the book!
Donna is strong willed, stubborn and damn hilarious! She definitely comes up against some struggles but no matter what was happening her character always provided entertainment and her personality always shone through whatever she was doing!
I loved Conner! He is actually the complete opposite to Donna which was always fun!! Conner was laid back, he was also so calm and collected - don't get me wrong he is sexy as hell and alpha but he done it such calmness at times and it made him so much hotter! His Scottish brogue also added to his character! Conner was equally protective as he was tender and was the perfect person..er vampire lol for Donna and her chaotic crazy bunch of friends and it was so fun seeing him interact with them!!
since you dislike sweetness, perhaps I should turn you over my knee and see if that improves your disposition... You smell like arousal and fear. There's no better combination to a vampire. Have I discovered a secret fetish?"
This was a fun, exciting and sexy read! I've head this so long and while I've been hooked on Paranormal romance it has been mostly shifter books and I haven't read many vampire books so I was a little nervous about reading this but I really loved it and bought the next two in the series straight after!I loved the build and the back and forth banter to Donna and Conner's relationship. They definitely had obstacles to face together which then came the angst but the angst completely fitted in with the story completely instead of being thrown in just for the sake of it. I loved Donna's group of friends and can't wait for more of them they brought so much humor and wit to the story. I would've loved just a bit more paranormal element but the realism and paranormal are balanced out great so that all readers can enjoy it!
"I will always come for you, Donna. You are everything to me. I would give up everything I have, everything I own, to ensure your safety."
4 solid stars!
I wavered between 3 and 4 stars.
So then I chucked my need to try to reconcile facts about vampires and increased my willing suspension of disbelief and was able to enjoy this book more.
Donna is working as a waitress in a bar after being wrongly fired from a cushy job in an advertising company. She is almost raped and killed by three men when in swoops Connor - a vampire.
Within 2 minutes, Donna suspects that Connor is a blood sucker (or at least delusional) but cannot fight the chemistry between them.
Connor is sex on a stick. He oozes alpha hot maleness. He wants Donna.
Donna is a sassy beautiful woman. She is brave, strong, independent and funny. (If she wasn't funny, I think this book would have been 3 stars for me).
The story is about how the vampire gets the human and how they have to fight the forces that do not want them to be together.
I lost count at how many times Donna gets abducted/knock out. It got silly (remember - willing suspension of disbelief - or basically, check your brain at the first page). Like how easily it was for vampires to plan ideas in human's heads, yet it was amazing how difficult it was for the evil vampire to get to Donna. Didn't make any sense. Just take over Donna's BFF's minds and have them kill her. Nope. Had to go for the more difficult and showy route. (check your brain at the first page).
Donna immediately notices the sharp canines and quick moments that Connor makes, but no one else can tell that they are a bit off? (again, check your brain at the first page).
Donna's BFF experiences a huge trauma, but it is never really addressed. She is happy go lucky at the end of the book. (check your brain at the first page).
The love scenes are many and very steamy.
The books ends with a HEA for Connor and Donna.
The evil villain loses at the end, but the is a bigger problem that is unresolved.
The ending is definitely set up for another book in this series.
So if you are able to check your brain at the first page - this is a sweet love story that happens to be about a vampire. The other characters are not very well developed.
So why 4 stars and not 2 stars? I enjoyed the story overall because I didn't take the book very seriously. Donna was a fun character for me- she is pretty funny and sassy and that is worth one or two stars itself for me. Connor was loyal, super sexy, protective and all alpha-male - what's not to like?
If you try to take this book seriously - you will hate it.
Have fun with it - it's a quick, breezy and steamy read.
