When Bite Me! was first released in Fall 1998, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was two seasons old, the characters were still in high school, and Buffy had just killed her soul mate, Angel. Four years later, the show is still a smash hit and a critical darling; Angel has returned and then gone on to his own eponymous spin-off show; Buffy has graduated from high school, entered university, found a sister, lost her mother, and died only to be resurrected in the sixth season by her friends. Now on UPN, the former WB show is the top-rated non-WWF show on the network. It has appeared in almost every critics year-end top 10 list, and every time Emmy season rolls around and Buffy is snubbed again, critics use their column space to lambaste the academy for its shallow vision. Bite Me! includes:
  • all the cast bios and episode guides from the original book
  • updated bios of new cast members who have become major characters on the show
  • an episode guide that features all six seasons of Buffy
  • capsule reviews of the full first three seasons of Angel, with more emphasis put on the crossover episodes between the two shows. It will also look at how the show has affected popular culture, making its way onto university courses in the United States and spawning a book of academic essays.

Okay, there are already a number of Buffy books dealing with the show that have been released ever since the show premiered in 1997. But, for some reason, we the fans keep snatching each new one up. More often than not, it's filled with stuff that most of us have probably already read a few times. However, each one has it's own surprises. This one is no different. This book is written by a fan for the fans. Nikki Stafford really knows her stuff. It's always interesting to hear critiques of episodes and story arcs and characters by a fan, instead of the usual critic. This one is a lot of fun to read. The book contains some things that other Buffy books haven't. Take for instance, the coverage of the first five posting board parties. That part is a lot of fun and makes you wish that you were there. There are the usual episode guides and summaries, but this one is the most up to date one on the shelves. This edition includes season six of ' Buffy' and season three of ' Angel '. Of course they are both halfway thru new seasons, but it's too soon for them. The Buffy section is way larger than the one on Angel. There is a lot more detail for the Buffy episodes. For each episode, Stafford tells you what songs played in the episode, who did them, and what CD they are from. There are also some brief biographies on the cast members of both "Buffy" and 'Angel". There is also an 'interesting fact' section that will tell you if there was something interesting about something or someone in that particular episode. Then there are two other sections called 'nitpick' and 'oops'. Now, Stafford obviously had a lot of time. The bloopers or inconsistencies she finds are mind boggling. The nitpicking she might have for a certain episode or a character can be questionable, and sometimes it's infuriating. It appears that the author had a hard time with Joyce(Buffy's mom)during season two and three. Like she had an agenda against her. This is where you might find some of Stafford's remarks uncalled for. Yes, Buffy has gone through a lot and she's only a 17 year old schoolgirl. But Joyce acts the way she should act. Wouldn't you be shocked as well as upset if you found out there are vampires and other beasties out in the world that can cause damage, pain, death, and destruction?. Not only that but your daughter is the slayer?. A person who fights all this and is constantly in dangerous, life threatening situations?. Not only that, but after defeating Angelus, telling her mother everything, Buffy vanishes. Disappears. Leaves town for moths. Again, Buffy went thru a lot. We can't imagine what it's like. But her friends and mother have every right to be angry and upset with her. It wasn't easy for Buffy at all, but she didn't exactly leave her friends and mother having a great time at Disneyland either. Okay. I got that off my chest. I just think her opinions on Joyce and her friends were unfair. There's more, but we won't get into that. It's too bad that she didn't give the same kind of attention to "Angel" in the episode guide section as she did with "Buffy". You get a summary, but no other special sections. That would of made an already fantastic book into a really fantastic book. Why it isn't included is quite puzzling. Maybe the next edition. There is also a really good quiz in here as well. You'd have to be really good to get a lot of these questions. There is also a small section of colored photos as well. The book is very balanced(although not according to a ridiculous review). It's a great addition to your Buffy shrine and will no doubt please every fan. It sure did please this fan. No matter what was missing or how it emphasized on other things when you thought it should be more on something else, it's still a great book. Any flaws here doesn't condemn it. a real fun read. Pick it up.

First of all, the title is great. "Bite Me" sounds like something Buffy would say right before dusting a vampire. But this is not a review of the title, it's a review of the book.
There is a whole lot of information included in this book, and it runs a close second to the 'Watcher's Guides' as far as being thorough, informative and interesting. However, the information it gives is great, but the way it is written sometimes isn't. The first thing you will notice, as other reviewers have pointed out, is that the author, Nikki Stafford, seems to really hate the character of Joyce, Buffy's mom. I do not know why this is, but she makes it very clear in the episode guide (under her summary of season five's "I Was Made to Love You" Stafford says that one particular line Joyce speaks makes her like the character for the first (and last) time in the whole series. Ouch. Stafford also doesn't seem to like Dawn very much, but admit it - who did like Dawn, at least at first? And despite the fact that the episode guide is informative, there is way too much of the author's opinion added in. In other words, I want to know the basics about each episode - I don't care if the author liked it or not. (Stafford tells us in her summary of "Beer Bad" that it is possibly the worst episode of the entire series, but I actually thought it was pretty entertaining.) But once you get over (or ignore) the author's comments, you will find you have in your hands one of the most extensive Buffy guides ever written. There are cast bios, a chapter on Buffy websites, a section of color photos of the cast, and an episode guide spanning from season one through season six (the two volumes of 'Watcher's Guides' only cover seasons one to four). I enjoyed the episode guide, because after telling what the episode was about, Stafford also included extras, such as "Restless Moments" (certain scenes in episodes that were crucial to the dreamlike season four episode "Restless"), "Wicca Willow Watch" (certain scenes in episodes that foreshadowed Willow's season six overuse of magic) "Nitpicks" (things that bugged Stafford about each episode), "Oops" (mistakes that were overlooked and left in the final cut of the episode) and a section for the music/bands that appeared in each episode. All of those sections for each episode provides you with a lot more insight to each episode. And to top it all off, Stafford also includes cast bios for "Angel", as well as a episode guide for the first 3 seasons of the spin-off.
If you're a "Buffy" fan, this guide is a must. My only wish is that it would have been published a lot later, so that season seven could have been added in as well. But that's just me being picky. If you like "Buffy", you'll really appreciate 'Bite Me'.

I am sorry I bothered to buy this book. In the first place, the book is highly slanted to some characters while totally ignoring others. Amber Benson (Tara McClay) never appeared in the opening credits of Buffy, yet she rates 8 pages in the Cast chapter plus a large color picture and several large black & white ones; Marc Blucas (Riley Finn), who did appear in the opening credits for two seasons, gets none. Other recurring characters get little or no credit, particularly Lorne (Andy Hallett), Lilah (Stephanie Romanoff), Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland), Darla (Julie Benz), Drusilla (Juliet Landau), and my personal favorite, Lindsey McDonald (Christian Kane). Christian rates one small picture, and the character's name is misspelled in the caption. In addition there is a huge chapter about posting board parties and another about a fan, Little Willow. This space could, and should, have been used for the overlooked characters. The importance of Wolfram & Hart, and particularly Lindsey, is largely overlooked in the Angel summaries. In fact, Angel is given rather short shrift in the episode reviews as opposed to the Buffy reviews. Its only saving grace is that it did include season 6 of Buffy and season 3 of Angel. This could, and should, have been a much better book with a better focus on what was really important. I am truly disappointed.
