I am not a fan of short stories but this one was actually pretty good. I purchased the Kindle version and also the Audible version to listen to while I worked out. The story is only 2 hours and 20 minutes long. I liked the story and the narrator of the book did a good job. My only complaint is that there were 4 or 5 occasions in the story where the narrator repeated the same 3 or 4 words 2 or 3 times. That was a bit distracting. I wasn't quite sure whether this was a chapter change or a technical glitch in the audio book.
I have read all of the Crimson World books and enjoyed them all so I thought I would go ahead and purchase and read or listen to these prequels. I liked the action and the lessons learned by a young Captain Garret and his friend Captain Terrance Compton. This story is also a character building task to introduce the reader to the leading characters of the extensive Crimson Worlds Saga of books and their personal backgrounds. I like the story and I rated it at 4 stars.
Overall, this novella is well worth the money for a peek at the formation of one of the main protagonists of the Crimson Worlds series. I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of the Crimson Worlds series.
The characters are vivid, and the conflicts are beautifully scripted.
Oh, and there is love and comradely competition, pride and shame. Read it.
