This story is a straight up romantic mystery with the emphasis on mystery. While the main characters have a strong attraction it doesn’t overwhelm the story. Actually, it builds over time. It’s much more realistic than a love-at-first-sight, which is okay in some cases but would have watered down this story.
I liked the way the author gives the character’s back stories over time. It was much better than being hit with information overload at the beginning. I appreciated Sharla Jean’s ability to pull herself up from a traumatic past and become a strong independent woman. Josh had also had issues in his past, but had worked hard to succeed despite them.
Like all readers, I like to see how long it takes me to pinpoint the bad guy. This story had twists, turns and red herrings that kept me guessing. I have and will continue to recommend this book to my friends.
Bitter Legacy is one of those books that you start and can not put down because around each page is another twist that adds just a little bit more mystery to the story. CB Clark has done a magnificent job of putting together a story that broke my heart, left me breathless at times, and then shocked me with a piece of info.
Sharla-Jean Bromley has been through a horrible situation and was then looked down upon so much so that she left town and hasn't returned until the funeral for her father. All she can think is that her Dad did not stand up for her at a time when she needed him most. She had not been a good girl but she was still an innocent child.
Josh Morgan had kind of stepped into the roll of child for Sharla-Jean's Dad. He looked upon Josh as the son he never had and also possible a child he could do right by even if Josh was not his child by blood. Josh cared deeply for Mr. Bromley and his death is weighing on him.
Sharla-Jean and Josh start out with a strong attraction but they also start off at complete odds with each other. Oh my the fireworks are flying off the sparks these two are creating with there frustrations and mistrust of each other. That attraction is still very much there but they have to get past some of the horrible things that are happening and learn to trust each other before they can give into their incredible attraction.
Ms. Clark did a fabulous job dealing with some very strong and difficult emotions and situations. This lady can tell a STORY! She's very talented and has the ability to capture my attention and hold on until the end. Then she has me wanting the next story soon.
The drama and suspense in this story is intense. There are so many things going on and they seem like they may not be related at all. Then there are things that appear to be related and they just may not have anything to with each other. I'm not going to tell you too much. I want you to grab this incredibly romantic suspense book up and settle in to enjoy. If you enjoy a really good romantic suspense as much as I do, you're going to LOVE this one.
I was given the opportunity to read this fabulous story and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.
Josh Morgan now owns half of Bromley Forest Products but in order to keep the company, he has to work with Sharla-Jean for an entire year according to Big Jim's will. He is extremely reluctant to do so but knows how many people are counting on him to keep the company going.
Yet someone else appears to have a vested interest in the company when things are broken and fires are started again. Is it Sharla-Jean like everyone suspects or is it someone with a hidden agenda?
I really enjoyed this book and some of the twists and turns that the reader is taken on.
My heart completely went out to Sharla-Jean for what she went through and I completely understand why she left. Yet she was still labeled so cruelly when she really she just needed some attention as she wasn't getting any at home. Yet she was able to turn her life around in Portland and become somewhat stronger although the names she was called at Jim's funeral really hurt her.
I liked Josh and how Jim used Josh as almost a replacement for Sharla-Jean once he stopped drinking. Josh was determined to keep the business running but he knew something was wrong. I was super mad at him when he lashed out and blamed Sharla-Jean for a few things but it was set up too much to be her fault.
Kevin Nelson was the company's comptroller and Josh never trusted him but Jim and then Sharla-Jean both did. He was definitely trying to get what he wanted from Sharla-Jean and he hated Josh so much. He was definitely an interesting twist in the story and someone that interfered with Josh and Sharla-Jean getting together.
I did figure out some of the stuff but I admit that I had the wrong angle and why and thought it was related to the twist in the will and not what really happened.
This is the first time I have read this author and it won't be my last.
