We the West: The Party Don't Stop

DJ Quik and Kurupt are amazing. This joint was worth the wait.

Since 1991, Quik has been representin' the West Coast with superior production and lyricism. Consider his albums: "Quik is the Name," "Way 2 Fonky," "Safe + Sound," "Rhythm-al-ism," "Balance and Options," "Under tha Influence," and "Trauma."

Kurupt is another exceptional West Coast talent, albeit not as popular as Quik. Consider his albums: "Kuruption!," "Tha Streetz is a Mutha," "Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey," and others. (I'm not as familiar with Kurupt...but I will be after I buy his albums.)

This collaboration is a welcome breath of fresh air. Neither talent dominates; both rappers deliver the goods equally. (This ain't a Quik album and it ain't a Kurupt album; it's uniquely Quik and uniquely Kurupt.)

Quik produces some amazing beats. This is some of his best production work. Quik seems to find the right balance between poppy, commercial hooks and underground, West Coast gangsta s---. He delivers smoothly on the mic.

What about Kurupt? He delivers too. Like I said, both deliver the goods equally. Like Quik, Kurupt shines brilliantly.

Quik and Kurupt give us a good variety. The titular track, "BlaQKout," is the perfect opening track. "Do You Know" and "Hey Playa (Moroccan Blues)" are immaculate, head-bobbing anthems. "9 Times Outta 10" isn't a head-bobber--it's a neck-breaker.

Perhaps the standout track is "F--- Y'all." It's pure, West Coast gangsta rap.

I enjoyed every minute of this joint. (In fact, I wanted more.) Like Quik's "Trauma," this joint is way too short. (And that's my only complaint...the short running time.)

David Martin Blake and Ricardo Emmanuel Brown are masters in the rap game.

One final thought: when will Quik and Devin the Dude join forces? (That would be a collaboration album for the ages.)

Great Addition To The Quik Collection

I'm a huge and long time fan of the Quikster since Born & Raised debuted back in 1990. Quik is the King of the West Coast and in my opinion a much better producer than Dre. Dre is good but Quik is consistent and keeps the West Coast poppin' with music that keeps the lowriders cruising, plus he doesn't wait a decade to maybe put out a cd (Dre - is Detox ever coming out????)

As for this album, I was dissappointed that I couldn't give it 5 stars. The production is tight and there are some banging beats, especially tracks #3 & #5. Quik & Kurupt both laid down some great lyrics BUT the cd is just too short. For two great rappers collaborating together I was expecting longer tracks. A good example is #9 - "9xOutta 10" was good but could have been excellent had Quik actually had a complete verse to give the song a little bit more length. The cd also could have done without track(s) #8 and #13(the song wasn't that good to warrant a remix)

Overall I like the cd for what it is - I collaboration showcasing Kurupt's lyrical abilities and Quik's ever consistent excellent production. It is definitely worth owning. I look forward to Quik putting out another album in the future bringing his crew of 2ndIINone, AMG & Hi-C, James DeBarge - this album seemed a bit weird in their absence.

Quik does it again!!!

If you're a DJ Quik fan, you will love this CD. Quik is the most musically gifted producer in hip hop. When he sticks to his musical abilities, this CD thrives. On some tracks however (pretty much the last half of the CD), he just seems to be experimenting, and in my opinion that experimentation should have remained an experiment and left on the studio floor...not on a CD. After listening to the disc, I downloaded 7 of the 13 tracks to my computer, USB drive, and phone MP3. Funny thing is, I came back and read the first review on Amazon, and that reviewer recommended the same exact 7 tracks. I agree with him 100%, thus here are those tracks:

1. BlaQKout
2. Cream N Ya Panties
3. Do You Know?
4. Ohh!
5. F*** Y'all
6. Hey Playa! (Moroccan Blues)
7. The Appeal

The rest is pretty much trash, but these 7 tracks were still enough for me to give the CD a 5 star rating. Anytime I can get 7 great tracks on any CD, it is a winner in my book. If you're a Quik fan, who especially liked the Balance & Options CD (one of my top 5 albums of all time-any genre), you will feel this one as well. Definitely some music to roll to in the car.

I've been searching for this album at cd stores all over. I finally found it here. Got to me before time and the quality was perfect, just as I remembered it. I love Quik and Kurupt for this album. Its different..versatile and overall perfection. Great purchase. Stays in my car.

Usually buying a DJ Quik album is a no-brainer, I don't have to download first cuz it always worths the money.Unfortunatelly this is not the case with Blaqkout. I didn't even know the album was coming out but when I saw that was a Quik & Kurupt collabo I din't think twice and pre-ordered the cd, what a mistake.

The production is terrible, both seem absolutely uninspired and the result is one of the worst albuns of the year, I don't know what they were thinking!!!They r both veterans, they have a respectable catalogue to say the least and for sure they know how to drop a funky album!!!

I really lost my money on this crap...
