Editorial Reviews
Review
"This book's complex picture of black life across Europe makes it an important read not only for Renaissance scholars, but for all scholars of the early Atlantic world...a valuable book...."
- H-Atlantic, Catherine Molineux, Vanderbilt University
"...the quality of the individual contributions is uniformly excellent. Each piece is carefully researched from both manuscript and printed sources, and each is an original contribution to scholarship...the works gathered together in this fine volume are likely to be cited and quoted for some time to come." - The International Journal of African Historical Studies John Thornton Boston University
"This excellent volume is a striking testament to what can be achieved in uncovering the black presence in Western Europe and serves as a stirring inpiration for future work." - Philip Morgan, Princeton University
"the volume offers an array of insights into a subject that has long deserved more attention than it has received." Renaissance Quarterly Liz Horodowich, New Mexico State University
"the collection is valuable for the excellent essays it does provide and especially for the insights into attitudes toward Otherness, especially that racial biasses are the product of one's particular social and political situation, and the discourses that are constructed around them."Mary C. Olson, Tuskagee University, Sixteenth Century Journal

I appreciate the fact that the author points out the need for extensive research into this era of history. Unfortunately mainstream education does not touch on the Black presence in history. This could be a great resource to build a course or even a few lessons around.

Hi. I tried to read through a couple of chapters of this book and it was so hard because it was one of the most racist books I have ever read. It encompassed just about every negative and disgusting stereotype I have ever heard about Black people. The authors presented these opinions as facts that go to the mid- evil age they are no. They are not. I am sad that Cambridge publishing would publish such evil nonsense. I do not recommend this book. It is a waste of your life to read it.

The collection of essays in Black Africans in Renaissance Europe epitomizes the best in scholarship and research. Sometimes heartbreaking, always fascinating, the writers discuss various aspects of the effects of slavery on Africans in Europe and on Europeans. The best of the essays -- for my interest -- are Paul Kaplan's "Isabella d'Este and black African women"; Debra Blumenthal's "'la Casa dels Negres': black African solidarity in late medieval Valencia"; and Nelson Minnich's "The Catholic Church and the pastoral care of black Africans in Renaissance Italy."

I wonder if Oxford press will have the courage to print the truth about The Moorish prescence in Europe which formed the very foundation of the Renaissance period. I am a man of faith, and my prayer is that Prince William will finally demonstrate that Anglican academia are no longer fearful of their ture heritage.
