The Queen requires Ciel to host a dinner party (she's not a guest) and what follows is what happens that night. The story starts with an outsider guest called Arthur. This "Arthur" wrote a story: A Study in Scarlett. We are introduced to the Queens fab butlers who are also peers. A murder happens and the only one without an alibi is Ciel. Then a couple other murders happen and Ciel has an alibi for those. I've already preordered the next two Butler books as they can't come fast enough. The translator notes in the back are awesome as they always explain Japanese translations and the author intent.

Amazing series full of complex storylines and spectacular art work. I must say Yana Toboso is really doing well with suck a captivating series full of characters you are instantly drawn too. As the manga series, I must say the anime is very well written and very well done. The series is crafted very well and I'm enjoying them more and more as the volumes keep pouring out. Great addition to anyone who loves anime and manga especially dark fantasy mixed in with a little humor. This series doesn't deserve a "good" review it deserves a marvelous one!

[Taken from my blog.]

Oh my God I love this series so much. After the circus arc, because of how much I loved it (and, yea, I'm still upset about it), I wasn't sure if whatever was next would be as good. And even when I first started this volume and found out that it was going to be a mystery plot, I wasn't sure if it would be good, but it was. It's still amazing and I love it.
I'm just kind of impressed by the fact that this series is still so good.
The volume starts by introducing us to a new character, Arthur, or Professor, who has been invited to a party. He's nothing special, just someone who sometimes writes stories and only a few has been published (I believe? His background wasn't totally clear to me, just that he isn't high up in class like everyone else we see). Mostly he opens things up, letting us know that something deadly is coming. Then it moves to two of the Queen's bodyguards, who show up at the Phantomhive manor, with a message from the Queen. There's a fight scene between them and the Phantomhive servants, which is pretty equal. Mostly I just love seeing the servants being badass; it's kind of like a special treat to me. She wants to impress some man, and has decided that Ciel will be the one to host a party for him. It's the first party Ciel has hosted, and he's reluctant, but does it because he needs to get in the Queen's good graces again after the whole killing-all-of-the-circus-and-the-children-with-little-to-not-good-enough-explanation thing. So he hosts the party and we are introduced to several new characters and we get to see Lau again, who is very cryptic and dark, most of which didn't leave me with a big impression.
Also, at first I thought Arthur was the special guest, but then we found out that he wasn't.

This is the ninth book in the Black Butler series and it was just as fantastic as all the previous volumes have been. This volume starts a new story arc and oh my what a story arc it is.

The Queen has requested that Ciel throw a party for some important guests in two weeks time. When the guests arrive things start going very wrong as people keep winding up dead with no witnesses! The whole thing turns into a bit of a “who done it” type of mystery with, of course, some strange twists.

There are a lot of new characters in this installment. Including the interesting character of an occult German author. All of the characters are intriguing and engaging; and of course beautifully drawn.

The illustration remains absolutely amazing. I am continuously amazed by the detail in the illustration and how beautifully each frame of drawing is staged. The story continues to be mysterious and intriguing (with some humor of course). This is just the first part of the mystery and I am dying (waa haa haa) to learn what happens next.

The whole story is a bit tongue in cheek with a devilish storm going on outside and a murderer stalking the halls of Phantomhive Manor. It’s very Victorian-horror-murder-mystery in feel almost to the point of cliche’. This gives the story a very entertaining feel and Toboso does an excellent job in keeping the story both interesting and darkly humorous. I just adored it and loved the tone to the story.

Overall a fantastic addition to the Black Butler series. I love love love this manga series. It is so deliciously entertaining and delightfully mysterious. Highly recommend to those who enjoy manga with a bit of a paranormal Victorian feel to them.

I ordered this volume along with nine other volumes from the same series. All of the books came to me as described , new. The condition was great; no nicks, bends or tears anywhere. The covers were shiny and free from finger prints (except my own I made during observation.) They all arrived within the estimated delivery time frame and were packaged well.
5 out of 5 stars.
