RileyRiley is a smart, strong and resilient woman. If there’s ever a sister who’s in trouble or a disagreement between friends, she’s often the peacemaker who will calmly help. |
KrisKris is the headstrong, determined and passionate woman of the group. She has very strong opinions, which she brings to people’s attention in vocal ways. She’ll be the first to correct anyone who says ‘girls,’ making sure they instead say ‘women.’ While she always has the right intentions, her tactics may sometimes be to her own detriment. |
MartyMarty is the ambitious, yet selfcontained, athlete of the group. She can see how Riley almost moves through the world like an open wound at times and acknowledges that she’s been in situations that she couldn’t control, so in turn, Marty’s always making sure Riley is okay. Marty spars with Kris at times, but there’s something familial about their exchanges, and it just shows how close they are. |
JesseJesse is the playful, buoyant, good-time gal of the squad. While not the sharpest of the group, she has a good heart and is always positive and supportive of her friends. |
Product Description
From the producer of Get Out and Halloween, comes a timely take on a cult horror classic as a campus killer comes to face a formidable group of friends in sisterhood. Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. But as Riley Stone and her Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters prepare to deck the halls with a series of seasonal parties, a black-masked stalker begins killing sorority women one by one. As the body count rises, the sisters start to question whether they can trust any man. Whoever the killer is, he's about to discover that this generation's young women aren't about to be anybody's victims.

***(edit)***
Watched Sophia Takal's remake of Black Christmas (2019) for the second time, and it doesn't just hold up, it gets better. Explicitly, unapologetically a feminist retrofit, everything here works, and it all hinges on Imogene Poots' amazing performance as Riley, survivor of sexual assault, who must rise again, while protecting her sisters (in a sorority, but I think the movie is clearly saying that all women belong to a sisterhood). While watching it, my wife became irritable early on, which is a clear sign of her discomfort, of being scared, and I found myself getting lost in tense scenes and feeling a sense of calm when relief arrives. It occurred to me that the word rape is never used, although the movie makes it clear that Riley was raped. I wonder if this was to preserve the PG-13 rating, a move to ensure that the film could be viewed by a wider audience, specifically teens. On the one hand, it is ridiculous that murdering people isn't necessarily an R movie move, but specific mention of rape is. Nonetheless, shrewd move from Takal and Blum and co to make sure this movie could be seen by a younger crowd, a group who specifically needs what this movie has to say. Brilliant and wonderful.
This film has several hot buttons. Date rape. Militant and uncompromising feminism. Militant and uncompromising male chauvinism. All of the pain and suffering in this film is a direct result of the collision of these 2 extreme points of view. Sadly, this makes the film directly relevant to the current extremely polarized state of world affairs, and to society in general, both of which are increasingly characterized by a stubborn refusal to compromise, or to even recognize opposing points of view as valid. Rated PG-13, you will not find any nudity or graphic violence. There is a supernatural element, which ironically, has inadvertently been triggered by one of the militant feminists through a victory in her fight against a male dominated establishment. If the body count is important to you, the final body count in this film is higher than both of the previous films put together. I detest having the plots of films spoiled for me, so I will stop here.
I've given this film 3 stars instead of 4 because of the specious use of the title Black Christmas. If they had used a different title, I'd have given it 4. While the use of the Black Christmas title probably drew more people to see it, I'd have to say that it's failure to deliver on the promise inherent in that title hurt it more than it helped.
