Story: Asta and Yuno are orphans left at a hick backwater village. Both have ambition - to become the next Wizard King so they can make life better for the poor. Yuno is quiet, good looking, and very talented with wind magic. Asta is impetuous, full of energy, yet is one of the rare people nearly devoid of magic. When the day comes to inherit their own grimoirs and build their magic, Yuno receives the very auspicious 4 leaf clover book - the same as the previous Wizard King. It looks as if Asta will receive nothing - until a mysterious grimoir finds him and gives him a sword that defeats or deflects magic. As both join the Magic Knights, their journey to becoming the Wizard King is about to begin.
The story pretty much follows Asta's point of view though clearly we are building up a rivalry for the best friends. Asta ends up in the Knights Squad that are a bunch of 'losers' while Yuno ends up with the top squad. Yet clearly this will be about Asta's unique grimoir and sword and how he learns to use them most effectively.
The series doesn't shy away from a huge list of characters. But each is drawn in a very unique style so it is very easy to tell them apart. If anything, the illustrations can often feel like they were done by many people instead of one since line widths and styles vary so greatly throughout.
I didn't go into Black Clover thinking I would like it over much but it surprised me. I find I'm liking it in much the same way I did at the beginning of Bleach. As such, I am looking forward to continuing the story. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
Taking place in a fictional world where there are separations of Class (Upper, Lower, and Middle) The main character Asta is unable to use magic in a world where Magic is everything. Most people have at least some magic but Asta has non what so ever. He's an orphan boy along with his childhood friend Yuno whom he was dropped off at the orphanage with. Asta has a thing for a nun there but that's not very important. Similar to Naruto Asta basically wants to be this world's version of Hokage known as the Wizard King, That along with the fact that Asta also looks a lot like Naruto actually. There is an award ceremony where people can get their grimoires. The Grimoires actually choose them but non of them choose Asta, he is left without one while Yuno ends up with the four leaf clover grimoire. A grimoire that past wizard kings had. You would think that this would upset Asta but he's actually more pumped and calls himself Yuno's rival that he will end up surpassing him and become Wizard King. After an attack on Yuno from the thief trying to take his new grimoire Asta comes to try to help and a new grimoire ends up appearing for Asta, the fabled Five Clover Grimoire. The Five Clover grants Asta the power of anti magic. He can negate the power of magic with his sword and it's awesome. After this, the similarities to Naruto start to die down. We do get something that I can only describe as a chunin exam but it's also not. It's to pick what group of mage knights you'll be in. After everything Asta ends up in the ruffian group called the Black Bulls and Yuno ends up in the high rank group. Asta is taken to the hideout of the Black Bulls where he meets the other members including Magna, Oh my god I love Magna. He's so hilarious and awesome. He also meets another new member named Noelle and I think she's going to end up being Asta's love interest in the future. She's a royal but she is unable to actually control her magic. After everything is situated they get their first mission for Noelle and Asta but Magna goes along with them because he's cool like that. They get into a fight with the bad dude Heath who uses Ice. It seems that Noelle managed to get it to work but I'm not sure because the Manga ended after the next attack of Asta.
I had a lot of fun reading this book and I definitely recommend it to anyone who's a fan of action packed Shonen manga and humor that can possibly rival that of One Punch Man. There's also some occasional fan service but not a lot so it's not as distracting.
Black Clover is actually a recent piece and only as of the time of writing this review, only the first two volumes are out in america and the third is coming out on October, I definitely can't wait to get the rest and this series will definately hold a spot on my manga shelf for a long time.
This series tells the story of Aster with his journey to becoming stronger, achieving his dreams while gaining experience and friends. Typical shounen manga but the main characters are so very unique. Aster, while seemed like a typical stupid MC, is actually not very stupid and is well-liked by everybody. Not only that the girls all seem to fall for him instead of typically fawning over the genius rival - Juno. And neither of them care about that! The story is fun and the characters are all very interesting, likable, and unique. What I like most about this story is that the rivalry between Aster and Juni doesn't stop them from being best friends and brothers. There's a clear understanding between them that one acknowledges and respects the other, there's no usual misunderstanding or underestimating the MC. And I absolutely love that their friendship is so very pure and light-hearted.
It's a must-read. The storyline is interesting and the art is beautiful. As someone who draws, I can tell that the mangaka really takes time to draw every single panel with passion.
