The first time I watched Gil Noble's show Like It Is was in the late 70s or early 80s Dr. Ben and Dr. John H. Clarke were guests on the show, you can watch lectures given by these two esteemed Historians (Master Teachers) on you-tube. This book is an excellent tribute to Mr. Gil Noble and his show Like It Is, on page 141 "The key to being an effective media person is involvement in the community. The pressures and seductions of TV can lure one away from the black and poor communities, when there is a real need to remain actively in touch with events there. Success can draw one away from the roots of one's race." Also on the bottom of page 146-147 "Many aspects of the black community have sustained me. By being active in the life of the community, I have kept my balance. My most powerful story ideas have sprung from my contacts there. There are fights and differences of opinion, and charlatans exist among blacks and must be dealt with. But there are also wellsprings of knowledge, talent, spirit, and fresh ideas that have kept me afloat and urged me onward."
Here Gil Noble has something to say about the people in control the 1% on page 180 "The poison of racism is poured into society's mainstream by the "haves." They already have too much wealth. Through their control of the mass media as owners and advertisers, they have conditioned masses of poor whites into thinking that the pitifully small progress the black race makes is a threat to whites." The influence of television on young people is mentioned here on the bottom of page 186-187 "I am convinced that TV is at least partly responsible for much of the negativism that today's youth is engaged in. I am also convinced that TV can redirect the behavior patterns of today's youth into positive channels. But the TV industry has to really want to do this before it can happen." The pictures in this book after page 64 speaks volumes about Gil Noble's connection to the Black community, if I were a young person working in television I would use Gil Noble as my role model throughout my career.

Excellent, excellent book! I watched the program Like It Is on television from the 70's until 2012 when it went off the air. It still amazes me that such an "in your fast" realistic look at America and racism was shown for 43 years on a major network. I have tried to obtain this book for many years but found that the prices I encountered were outrages. Finally I was able to obtain a used copy which was is excellent condition. I will keep this book and pass it on to my children's children when they are old enough to comprehend the content.
