I have a degree in electrical engineering, but since out of school, I haven't really needed to solder much of anything. But when the batteries started dying in my old Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games, I knew I'd need something for some simple, decent electrical work. I didn't want to toss down a hundred bucks on something I wouldn't use very frequently, so I purchased this and hoped for the best (in the face of all the reviews claiming that this can't do electrical work).
I couldn't be happier with this iron. It heats up really fast and easily gets hot enough to melt solder (I used American Terminal AT-31604 60-40 Rosin Core Solder in my video) without difficulty. The base is really nice - a good, strong hold, with an included sponge in the base, and some nice alligator clips that could be more flexible, but they get the basic job done. I've used this to successfully solder in new batteries for my Gameboy games, and I couldn't be happier.
I would guess that a more expensive iron with a finer tip would be a good investment if you were planning to use this every day, but if you just want something for once-a-year work, this will meet your needs without costing an arm and a leg.
