You could whittle a cumbersome, non-collapsible walking stick from local hardwood, or you could just grab the Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Z Trekking Pole. Made from 100% carbon fiber, this collapsible trekking pole weighs in at a featherlight 17oz--that's per PAIR--and has a collapsible shaft for easy storage and travel. Easily interchangeable trekking and powder baskets make it easy to handle summertime hikes and winter trailbreaking, while the Flex Tech Tips let you use rubber for warm-weather missions and carbide for grip on snowy and icy surfaces. Somehow, Black Diamond also managed to work in a natural cork grip with an EVA foam extension and a breathable and moisture-wicking strap, all while making sure the Alpine Z weighed about as much as your beard.

I absolutely love these Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Z Trekking Poles. They are extremely stable and strong, more so than aluminum poles, as well as being lighter and quieter than the aluminum poles on asphalt. They fold and open very easily. They are very comfortable to hold (love the cork handles) and have adjustable nylon straps. The straps are labeled L (left) and R (right) so you know which is left and which is right. These poles allow me to walk with much more stability and ease and without pain in my arms after use.
Just be aware that these poles are NOT adjustable. Go to the Black Diamond web site to determine the size that is just right for your needs http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/trekking-poles/alpine-carbon-z-pole-BD11217400001201.html#start=1 (Click on “Size – View Chart.”) My height had always been 5’ 8” (although due to scoliosis is now an inch or so less) and I personally find the 120cm to be just right for me. If you happen to have another pole around before purchasing these, you can set it to the various heights available, and see which gets you closest to the 90 degree sweet spot pictured. As described, the 120cm pole folds down to 16 inches. This gives me the option to keep them folded in a casual crossbody sling bag for the start of my walk, and have them easily available to me should I start to have pain and instability and need to use them for the remainder of my walk.
Also note that these poles do not come with any rubber tips – you’ll have to buy those separately. I purchased the Black Diamond Classic Trekking Pole Tip Protectors which are fine. I also purchased the Pair of Pace Maker Extended Life Vulcanized Rubber Replacement Tips/asphalt Paws Ferrules which are pretty fabulous.
