50 Black Diamond Watermelon Seeds by RDR Seeds
- Make sure this fits by entering your model number.
- Quintessential, King, Favorite, whatever you want to call it, this watermelon is popular for a reason!
- This delicious watermelon averages 30-50 lbs, but sometimes gets as big as 75 lbs! Plants grow 12-18" tall.
- In areas with shorter growing seasons it is best to start watermelon seeds indoors to get a head start. Plant 3 seeds per pot about 1/4" deep and provide heat to about 80 degrees to increase germination.
- Ensure soil does not dry out due to heat. Seeds should germinate in 1-2 weeks. After seeds have germinated thin to one per pot. Make sure to acclimate plants to the outdoors for several days prior to transplanting to harden them off.
- To sow directly in garden plant 5 seeds per hill 1' apart with 4' between rows. Requires healthy amounts of water and warm temperatures. Black plastic on soil can aid in warming soil.

The outside is a dark green, so dark that in the shade it's almost black. the flesh is a bright red, the flesh is firm and as you cut the mellon, it practically splits ahead of the knife. The seeds are black and about the size of your thumb's fingernail. The red flesh is very sweet, I think the best way to describe it, as comparing the heart of a prime green stripe mellon being the "best" part of the mellon - well, that pales to the worst part of a black diamond.
So, you might as well grow your own. As these are NOT a Hybrid watermelon, you can save he seeds and grow more of these every year. And trust me, you will have plenty of seeds from a single mellon for next year, and plenty of seeds to share with friends and family. These are excellent mellons - you will never go back to a green striper again; unless you are out of the diamonds.
The same day that I received the seeds, I planted 29 seeds in starter trays (only had 29 pots available, lol) using a 50/50 mix of peat moss and clean potting soil with perlite. I heavily watered the seeds in well draining starter pots.
The first seed broke ground in less than 48hrs. On the third day, I was pleasantly surprised to see 9 of 29 seeds already breaking through.
The real shock came on the 6th day, when I actually counted 29 fully sprouted seedlings. I have to say that, at least by my experience, 100% germination is unheard of. These plants have so far been unbelievable. I have transferred all of them to the garden just two days ago so I cannot testify as to their harvest and taste yet. I am very excited about their progress so far and will update when I finally sit down in the garden and eat the first one right right off the vine ;-).
For now my review is 5 across the board but....
I'll definitely come back with growth or lack of growth reports as well as finished product pictures.
Observation & Advice.....
From the listed reviews here as well as other seed broker sites, some advice to those looking to purchase any type of seeds from any seed broker. Top notch seeds from a top notch seed broker can't overcome lack of experience and or knowledge in the garden.
Reviews mentioning low or no germination tell me it's typically the growers fault. There's a fine line between keeping seeds moist enough for germination and drowning the seeds into rotting. People tend to get impatient and keep adding water as a result only to rot good quality seeds.
Moist not dripping wet.
Purchase peat pellets and a seeding tray WITH a cover then in a warm place for germination.
I've never had 100% germination failure with the worst of seeds don't punish the seed broker because of your failure.
Hopefully I can post pictures of what I'm talking about below and will if I see a place to upload my pictures.
Update, one more seed is growing. So 5 plants out of 18 seeds.
I planted 18 seeds. Four seeds grew. I can’t answer on flavor because they have to grow and develop into fruit.
