The main picture of this puzzle is very cool, for that I'm giving it 2 stars. The box gives an inaccurate depiction of the image. The actual puzzle has a ton of black edging on the left and right. The edging fits together about 100 different ways. Which one is right? Who frickin knows?! All the pieces are 2 in/2 out and can fit in multiple places. I've ripped apart the edges 10 times and it still isn't right. There's no way to know which pieces are wrong and which ones are right. I'm totally jealous of the reviews with varied puzzle piece shapes because mine sucks. I wanted to glue it and hang it up in my HS son's room but you can't do that unless you can actually get all the pieces in. Maybe I can fill in the empty spots with putty. I've done some challenging puzzles with lots of black before but this is a pathetic joke. I'd never buy a puzzle from this maker again. Springbok is a way better brand. What a waste of money.

We loved the look of this puzzle and decided to give it a go despite some reviews saying it isn't good quality. I wish I had unboxed it before the return period was up, because I would have sent it back. The pieces are so poorly cut many of the edges are fuzzy, as if the die used to cut it was so dull it tore rather than sliced the paper. Many pieces are peeling and separating, and some had chunks of cardboard that weren't cut all the way through. The shoddy cutting made it nearly impossible to see which of the solid black pieces fit together properly, and I ended up using a combination of shining a light from the back of joined pieces and inspecting the seams with a magnifying glass to get it just right. I do a lot of puzzles, but this one was not enjoyable.

My 10 year old loves his copy of Theodore Gray's "The Elements" and has read it from cover to cover many times over. Surely that would translate into being excited about a puzzle with the periodic table from his favorite book, right? Turns out he'd rather read about elements than help put together a mostly black and grey puzzle. We started putting it together a week ago (and by we I mean ME, along with some help with cousins here for a visit) and we're maybe a third of the way done. It's a battle of wills now... I will not surrender to this puzzle. I will conquer it! Then I will glue it and frame it and that will be the end of it's puzzling days. Soon. Very soon. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go play "every black piece in every hole" for a few hours. *twitch*

Okay. Um. Okay. This may be the most frustrating puzzle I have EVER done. It’s really disappointing because it’s really gorgeous. I really really really want to finish this puzzle. Really. My son also wants to frame it. However, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. I think you have to hit some stoke of luck to be able to complete it. I don't understand the people who have photos of it completed. And if you have kids (or someone who isn’t anal about extreme details) helping you, forget it. It is only possible with a magnifying glass and spotlight. Maybe. Or, actually, a light table would have been helpful.
Every single piece is 2 in/2 out, so they all technically fit together. It’s a fun challenge in the photo, but once you get to the black only edges, again, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.
So, nice puzzle, large size is cool, quality is good, photo is stunning. It’s also the worst form of puzzle torture.

There must be multiple variants of this puzzle based on the photos from other customers. The one my family received only had 2-in/2-out peices. No all-in nor all-out. Picture quality was clear and aided in builing the majority of the puzzle. We gave up on the edges as it was impossible to determine if placement was accurate given the similarites of the pieces.

This review is about the quality of the puzzle pieces. I got this for my grandson who is now 11. He has had no trouble building this one several times since he was 8, and also has built the Map of the Sky all by himself. My problem with the Elements puzzle is the fact that this is the third year in a row I have had to remove it from the dining room table for the holidays, (Yes, the purpose of our table is to build puzzles.) and the interlocking is so poor that I can’t even slip a thin sheet of paper under it without its buckling. I’ve just taken the Map of the Sky and two other puzzles off simply by sliding thick poster board under them. The Elements one is giving me so much trouble that I had to take a break and vent, or warn you. If you take the time to build it, do it on top of poster board if you plan to move it. And have fun.

This puzzle is junk because of two huge problems:
- The pieces are cut in a way that almost every piece and interlock with another piece. This may not sound like a big issue, but if you're not sure that something exactly matches, other puzzles won't fit exactly to give you an additional level of feedback. This puzzle allows you to make mistakes (especially with all the black pieces) where you can make mistakes and not know that you made a mistake until a later piece won't fit and you don't know why.
- Large number of black pieces. Never fun for a jigsaw puzzle, but compounded with the "almost everything fits everywhere" it leads to complete madness.
This could be a good puzzle if the printing was at the level of a decent puzzle, but this is the worst printed puzzle I've come across.

nope no no. i do a lot of puzzles but i never want to look at this one again. it was too dark and difficult and boring. most of my reviews on puzzles are happy but seeing this pop up just frustrates me. we gave up on it after a few weeks of no-one wanting to attempt it. it aggravates me that the box shows a rainbow band across the bottom of the box as it is not on the puzzle. it would be far more helpful if the colors on the surrounding boxes were different or had a pattern to break up all the negative space. and like 100 pieces just black. no thanks no way. tell you what you can have my uncompleted puzzle its still in the box and we moved on. I am off working way cooler puzzles and really learned my lesson on buying puzzles for educational purposes, i wouldn't have even enjoyed this in a school setting, gross.

DIMENSIONS
Allow more space for this one, it’s longer and narrower than the usual 1000 piece - about 35 inches wide, but a reduced height. I had to use my extra-large board, the 2000-piece one.
QUALITY
It’s ok. Not the best quality I’ve ever come across, but it’s ok. Nice varied pieces, interesting shapes, fitting together well, and they were all there.
The cardboard is thick enough to handle, and the finished jigsaw is quite substantial, it was just that the image could have been glued on a little better. Several of the pieces were starting to “flap open” (see photo for example) so I found it easier to keep the glue beside me as I did the jigsaw. Once all the rogue flaps had been glued, it was fine.
DIFFICULTY
The hardest part (for me) was the edge, or at least, two thirds of the edge. Pure black, almost impossible, so that had to be left until the end - one piece at a time, trying every piece in turn.
The main body of the jigsaw was good - challenging enough to keep me absorbed, but easy enough to complete in a couple of days.
SUBJECT
Obviously this is main reason for choosing any jigsaw.
I found it interesting, attractive, and informative; fascinating, to be honest. Beautifully laid out, with some great illustrations, and very imaginative/resourceful depictions of the different elements.
The artist has chosen whatever he thinks is the best image of each element - whether it’s based on the name, or the actual element. For example, “Tin” is shown as a little tin soldier, whereas “Einsteinium” shows an image of the great man himself.
CONCLUSION
All-in-all, I enjoyed doing this jigsaw. Tricky in a few parts, informative, excellent images, and fairly robust. Recommended.

I had assumed that a bit of an academic background in Chemistry would have given me that vital edge in taking on this puzzle but, oh my giddy aunt. It's an absolutely beautiful image and a real challenge and a half. The pieces are sturdy, although they did give off a faint smell, not unlike vomit. Something to do with the printing methods I assume. I hope, anyway.
I always try to get as far as possible with jigsaws without using the box and, of course, with my superior Chemistry knowledge I was obviously not going to be using the box at all, right? I made an executive decision to dispense with the edge pieces as my starting point, owing to the fact that they are virtually all bits of the table's black background - I didn't fancy losing all enthusiasm for the thing before I had a chance to sing Tom Lehrer's masterpiece a few dozen times. So, armed with my superior Chemistry knowledge I embarked upon my scientific odyssey.
The logical starting point, I found, was the noble gases. They're pretty and it's easy to spot their different colours amidst the sea of silvery metals, strange grey writing and the background that is blacker than a priest's socks. Hydrogen was nice and obvious too, so that just left the other hundred odd elements to hunt down and destroy. Well, I tried. But after a good twenty minutes of simply staring vaguely into the box lamenting my thoroughly useless memory I was forced to grab the lid and start all over again. Things obviously became a whole lot clearer with that sort of professional help, although that grey writing is a challenge all of its own. I was a little disappointed that the visible spectrum was not part of the puzzle, not least because I was ready to belt out 'I Can Sing A Rainbow' a few times to help me with that bit. Perhaps it WAS there, but was simply sucked into the blackness of that background, never to be seen again...?
I found this to be a difficult puzzle to complete. In fact I didn't even bother with the background, or the edges. The table itself though is utterly stunning. Nature is a wonderful thing, no doubt about it.

Non standard size 1000 piece puzzle - won't fit standard puzzle mats
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 25, 2018Verified Purchase
Great fun doing this puzzle. An afternoon and evening well spent. 2 small gripes though. This is not a standard size 1000 piece puzzle and did not fit in the puzzle mate mat and case that I bought at the same time. Don't like me be fooled by the people who bought this puzzle also bought this item at the same time guidance -it was a lie and because I bought both items at the same time myself it is one that will be perpetuated -I had to build the puzzle on my table anyway. So buyer beware. The other gripe is it is 1000 pieces all present and came in a sealed bag but it is not the best cut puzzle in the world and 1 of my pieces - the last one of course - doesn't fit perfectly it is a bit of a squeeze so another piece is in the wrong place somewhere -there are a lot of black pieces and it is proving difficult to find where I have gone wrong. With a well cut puzzle this would not happen.

This is a really nice jigsaw, enough of a challenge to make it fun. I tend to do jigsaws without looking at the picture and I am enjoying trying to dredge up my A Level chemistry knowledge! The puzzle pieces are unusual shapes too which is a nice change.
The reason for four stars instead of five is that the board is thinner than you'd get with a Ravensburger or Wasgij etc so it feels slightly flimsy and this concerned me to start with. However the pieces do fit together well and I have now got used to them being thinner. Also, the American spellings such as "sulfur" and "aluminum" may offend some purists - or perhaps that was just me ;)

Good wet day on holiday puzzle!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 31, 2015Verified Purchase
We did this puzzle on a family holiday and really enjoyed it - it is big enough for several people to work on it at a time. It does have quite a lot of dark pieces, so good light is recommended. Very interesting to find out a bit more about the elements. It is a bit wider than most 1000 piece puzzles so we had to build an extension to our puzzle board - you might want to check you have the room before you start!

I bought this as a learning activity, it might work as a puzzle - but I don't feel like I have any better understanding of the elements.
A suggestion might be for a puzzle of 118 pieces, each piece represents an individual element with no atomic number and no picture on the box.

This puzzle is harder than it looks, basically I had to work from the inside out, instead of find and putting together the edge pieces, which is what I would normally do, along with most puzzle fans I'm sure.
Educational too, I was able to answer a popular quiz show question after doing this puzzle, so was well pleased with myself.

This is the best jigsaw puzzle I have ever tried. It is very large and very tricky, and you cannot help but learn masses of stuff about the elements as you are doing it. Because it takes a long time to complete, you probably want an empty table top to leave it on for a week or so. Or maybe I am just really slow at jigsaws! :)
