Product Description
Meet Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White), the smoothest, baddest cat on the street. He’s a ladies’ man and the man with a plan. He’s also a former C.I.A. agent out to avenge his brother’s death. Whether he’s taking down drug dealers or sweet-talking foxy mommas, he’s the man on the streets out to stop The Man. Take a wild ride from the mean streets of the ghetto to the pool halls of the inner city, all the way to the “Honky House” with this bad-ass, tough-as-nails action hero. BLACK DYNAMITE is a kung-fu-fighting, pimp-slapping, gun-blasting, outrageously over-the-top parody of ’70s-era blaxploitationfilms that delivers big action and even bigger laughs like nobody’s bizness.

When drug dealers take out his kid brother, ex-CIA agent Black Dynamite (Spawn's Michael Jai White) makes like a karate-chopping dynamo to track them down. Armed with a .44 Magnum, a set of nunchucks, and a sexy 'stache, Big D starts out in the City of Angels, where his buddies Cream Corn (In Living Color's Tommy Davidson), a hustler, and Bullhorn (co-writer Byron Minns), a club owner, offer to lend a hand. The deeper Dynamite digs, the more endangered his life becomes as he uncovers a conspiracy to keep the black man down by flooding the streets with malt liquor and filling the country's orphanages with smack. Since the smooth operator has a way with the ladies, he also enlists Gloria (I Am Legend's Salli Richardson-Whitfield), a socially-conscious soul sister, to aid in his clean-up campaign. Director Scott Sanders and White, who co-wrote the script, collaborated on 1998's Thick as Thieves, and their chemistry shines through. If the supporting cast can be a little wooden, White gives Shaft's Richard Roundtree a run for the money with his cool-cat charisma. Set in 1972, Black Dynamite doesn't just act like a movie from the Superfly era, it looks and sounds like one, too, courtesy Adrian Younge's old-school funk score, Shawn Maurer's 16mm cinematography, a cartoon credit sequence, and some carefully choreographed boom mic appearances. And dig those crazy cameos: Arsenio Hall as Tasty Freeze, Brian McKnight as Sweet Meat, and NBA veteran John Salley as Kotex. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

But, this is good the second time around too, because you might have missed a movie reference the first time; and the commentary will spell out a joke or two that I have to admit I did not see the first time (there is a visual 'joke' ''Where did the shot come from?'' that is actually a reference to the MLK assassination! THAT takes balls...! And, yes, I laughed when I realized I MISSED the obvious 'posings' by the actors...).
Michael Jai White admits he is, basically, imitating Jim Brown's acting and is flat-out hilarious when portraying the "thoughtful Jim''. There is a lil' bit of Fred Williamson in there too.
Sally Richardson-Whitfield is perfect in 'fro' and hotness playing the Pam Grier 'look' named "Gloria" (for Gloria Hendry who was in Black Belt Jones; and Black Caesar...).
Bryon Minns who plays ''Bullhorn'' also co-wrote with Jai White and Director Scott Sanders who, together do the (good) commentary. It's easy to look passed the one or two times in commentary when what they are saying and 'trying' to be funny about is just not funny.
4 1/2 stars for plenty of laughs and great stock footage used to represent 70's because it didn't matter if it might have been a car chase clip from tv's Police Story! All part of the fun!
Same car is used for different car crash explosion too!
Checkout ''B.D'' (as he is sometimes affectionately called) tell the little sisters he does not know who their daddy is. "MY mama said my daddy is "BLACK DYNAMITE!"
"UH, lotta' people with that name."
BLACK DYNAMITE is sometimes offensive and appropriately inappropriate in its affection for the genre.
The 'investigation' of Code Kansas and the ridiculous, roundabout way the players end up singing 'little richard' should be much more well known. The 'Kansas' sequence is a classic, comic moment as good as Mel Brooks or Richard Pryor -- rolled into one.
OH, and now we know where the chicken and waffles menu came from!

But it is still hilarious. It has loads of style, a great soundtrack, and excellent directing that makes this film feel straight out of the 70s.
This movie is filled with unmentioned gags. Visual gags, consistency gags, even dialogue gags, this movie is packed to the brim with things to make you laugh. If you are worried you might miss those, there is still plenty to enjoy - the film has straight out jokes, a silly plot, and action scenes that straddle being a spoof while making it clear that Michael Jai White is fully capable of doing all of these stunts completely seriously.
This is the funniest film I have seen in ages, and is up there with other brilliant spoofs like Austin Powers. Watch this movie.

I bought this as I'm a fan of Michael Jai White (and thought 'Blood and Bone' was great). Here, you'll find all the usual kung fu magic, although with a 70's feel.
White co-wrote this film, and obviously has a great sense of humour. This movie takes the piss out of 70's action films, and it's hugely entertaining. Black Dynamite is an ex-military, special forces guy who now operates as a sort of gangster, alongside various pimps and prostitutes. He uncovers a diabolical plot - led by the US Government - to shrink the private parts of black men ...
Why it's not been released in the UK on Blu-ray I don't know. So I bought the German version. It plays perfectly.
From beginning to end I was either smirking, laughing or nodding in appreciation.
It's been followed by an animated series ... I hope there'll be a 'Black Dynamite 2'!
This film has EVER blaxploitation stereotype trope in it... You name it... it is all here...
If you love anything Afrocentric, you will love this... the fashions, the music (British library music)
the action... buy this dvd... or be a "jive-turkey-etc-etc-etc..."
