OK, have had this a little over a year now and it still works fine. I do admit that it's kind of fun to use in pursuing and zapping pesky flies! HOWEVER, on most common house flies I've dispatched, it's more of a "stunner" than a "killer". On more than one occasion after being zapped, the fly falls to the floor and if I'm not quick to either step on him or rezap a couple of times, the lil guy gets up, flips me off and flies away ! So anyway, I've lowered my rating from 5 to 3 stars.
AA batteries are easily installed it seems to get quite a bit of life out of a single pair of batteries. The ON button must be held down for it to work which is no probably due to its positioning on the side of the handle allowing it to be held down with either a thumb or forefinger, either work fine.
One small feature that I really appreciate is the D-ring on the end. This allows it to be hung easily and, therefore, easier access when needed.
I subtracted one star for this reason- When zapping flies with this, it frequently does not kill them. It will stun them enough to make them easier to zap again, stomp on or slap with another fly swatter, but that's if you find the bugger after you stun it. If you are lucky enough to get the fly caught in the racquet, you can continue zapping the thing until it smells like burning and dies, but if you swat at it and it bounces off, chances are the fly is still alive somewhere. Maybe it would die on its own, I dunno. I do know that they can still fly after that initial zap if it doesn't snap, crackle and pop a few times.
I use this zapper in conjunction with another fly swatter and together they form an unholy alliance, ripe for the destruction of flies.
A huge bonus to this item is the low price. Makes it easy to try out and not much is lost if you find it's not up your alley. I think it's well worth it.
Possible design issue or product issue.
There appears to be the "electrified" "zap" grid across the racket with two shielding screens on ether side of the zap grid. Possibly to protect fingers if touching that area. Not sure why the protective screens are there as they also would probably interfere with bugs reaching and touching the zap grid unless the bug were to be able to make it through the small openings in the protective screens first. It looks like the bugs are just as likely to bounce off the protective screens as to get through to the zapper.
I doubt the bug would be zapped by just touching the protective screens, I don't know but doubt it.
It is unlikely that anything larger than a small fly or gnat could fit through the holes in the protective screens so you probably couldn't get a moth, spider or wasp that gets in the house.
In addition, if the bugs did get through and get zapped they would become trapped between the protective screens and the zap grid and the zapper would likely become a collection of dead bugs.
Look for something that doesn't have the protective screens, just the zap grid.
That's just my judgement by looking at the device, but I will never know because it didn't work.
It's in the dumpster now as it isn't worth the effort to try to return it.
