Invigorating and Creative Recipes to Ignite Your Senses
For Jerrelle Guy, food has always been what has shaped her―her body, her character, her experiences and her palate. Growing up as the sensitive, slightly awkward child of three in a race-conscious space, she decided early on that she’d rather spend her time eating cookies and honey buns than taking on the weight of worldly issues. It helped her see that good food is the most powerful way to connect, understand and heal.
Inspired by this realization, each one of her recipes tells a story. Orange Peel Pound Cake brings back memories of summer days eating Florida oranges at Big Ma’s house, Rosketti cookies reimagine the treats her mother ate growing up in Guam, and Plaited Dukkah Bread parallels the braids worked into her hair as a child.
Jerrelle leads you on a sensual baking journey using the five senses, retelling and reinventing food memories while using ingredients that make her feel more in control and more connected to the world and the person she has become. Whole flours, less refined sugar and vegan alternatives make it easier to celebrate those sweet moments that made her who she is today.
Escape everyday life and get lost in the aromas, sounds, sights, textures and tastes of Black Girl Baking.

Have been recommending watching “High on the Hog” on Netflix, purchasing this book and Jubilee.
African American history feeding your bellies, soul, and mind. Cannot say enough about how valuable these cookbooks are.
Black Girl Baking is clear, instructive, sourced, and easy to follow with brightly colored photos.
As a gourmet cook with an extensive cookbook collection including Gullah, Black Girl Baking took my collection to new heights. Mango curd has multiple uses, but how she works with veggie based substitutes is genius.
For the first time in 5 years my husband enjoyed mac and cheese (originated in Thomas Jefferson’s kitchen by his slave James Hemings) with veggie based “dairy” and some of my own creative tweaks. Baking book changed his world.
FYI: While at Rutgers (adult student) did a final paper and presentation on Gullah. My presentation included making sesame cookies/wafers for my class. A student took a bunch because his Caribbean Mom used to make them.
Watch the series and buy this book.

I really liked the fact that although this isn't a cookbook that's for any specific special diet, almost all of the recipes are either naturally vegan or can be easily made vegan/dairy free with simple adaptations, and the author clearly has an excellent understanding of vegan baking.
The chapters are based on different senses, rather than the standard "bread, biscuits, cakes..." format of most baking books. This is a lovely idea and done REALLY well - so well that I can't imagine the book being set out in any other way.
The recipes range from more complex things that you'd choose to make when you're in the mood for taking your time over baking something, to things you make when your aim is to get something baked as soon as possible with what you already have in the cupboards. It's nice to have this variety - and some of the recipes are downright deliciously trashy (for want of a better word - this is definitely not an insult!) for when you're in the kind of mood where you want to relive slightly fancier versions of unhealthy nostalgic things from your childhood (rice crispie cakes with bourbon brown butter!).
The whole book is a fantastic variety of flavours and textures, and there's virtually nothing that made me think "I already know how to make that". There are variations on classics (more familiar to Americans than Brits like me, I suspect), and some completely unique recipes and combinations of flavours and ingredients that I would have never thought of before. Some recipes are healthier, some less so. It has everything. Interesting breads, healthy(ish) snacks, fancy desserts, sweet things, savoury things...there's something for everyone and every occasion.
The author's love of baking really shines through, as does her clear fascination with different flavours, ingredients, textures and cooking methods, and she takes inspiration from all areas of her family background, different places she's lived, and different people she's cooked with. I really enjoyed reading through it and marking out the things I'd like to make, but I shouldn't have bothered with all of the bookmarks because in the end I wanted to make pretty much everything!
This has inventive must try recipes, with very creative flavour combinations accompanied by stories to warm your heart.
